I tried to register for the workshop, but the form requires you choose the chapters to which you belong as a due-paying member. Since I'm not a due-paying member, I can't register because I can't fill out the required field. Thank you so much for the offer to register though.

Hi,

Hi Blind McGiver and all -

I've never used iDevices before. I've used a braille display with a computer though, and I've heard of VoiceOver. So I Know what you mean.

I also forgot to mention that all iPhones have a built-in screen reader if you’re not familiar with it. Called voiceover. Also can add a braille display to it. I’m not sure how familiar you are with the technology or one so I’m just guessing you don’t know how much. I apologize if you’re probably smarter than me maybe. LOL

Amanda, you have an excellent point. I, too, am a lifelong braille reader. I was so fortunate to have received quality instruction in k9indergarten.

Back on topic - I would be looking for a cell phone or iPhone that at least talks, if it doesn't have braille display support.

Everyone's needs aren't quite the same.

Most phones these days offer Bluetooth pairing. However pairing with specific Braille displays is dependent on other factors at times.Everyone doesn't read Braille as well.I'm a lifelong proficient Braille user but Idon't require Braille for everything.

For a senior, whether or not they have lo vision or other eyesight issues, a clearly readable display is helpful. My Mom isn't visually impaired but she likes the larger display on the smart flip phone I obtained for her.

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but...

Blind McGiver - I think the flip phone you're looking for for your mother should talk. If she reads braille, the phone should also have braille display support.

Would anybody have any good suggestions on a good flip phone for the blind. I’ve tried to give my mother my old iPhones and she just can’t understand how to use it. No matter how hard I try to just tell her let’s start with the basics on just say using Siri and just make a phone call but she just doesn’t wanna touch it

Jen:

It depends if you want a simple flip phone, or a smart phone.I am sure there will be a debate among members about the advantages and disadvantages of each, but, in this day and age, I think a smart phone would be a good choice.

As for me, I think the iPhone has the best in accessibility, but that will probably be debated also.Hahahaha.

There will be more of a learning curve for a smart phone, but worth the challenge.Do you have access to any Apple stores? They have classes for blind users, at least, they do where I live.
