[Electronics-Talk] Adding an External Indoor Antenna to a Toshiba Fire TV Model

Oh I totally agree! It's just a higher gain effect so the range is perhaps
there's some advantage. I merely stated the description from the
manufacturer and not what I expected. My point being too that the two
network affiliates are local to Washington, DC and not in Baltimore which is
over 40 miles away from my home so I found it a bit disconcerting with the
antenna flat on the window that although I scanned three or four different
times so far with different configurations and antenna positions, the result
wasn't that different.
Ok, I'll not discuss this topic anymore unless necessary.
Thanks for the input, everyone.
Amanda

Amanda,
I don't see how an in-door antenna could have claimed a range of 200 miles
even during the old analog days. Receiving the newer HD channels is more
complicated. Sometimes VHF channels are paired with UHF channels, for
example. What I have found is that antenna placement can make quite a
difference. Unfortunately, if you move your antenna, you may need to have
your TV search for channels again. Also, because of the UHF component, your
building may block channels from certain directions eve though you are
geographically close to them.
Each of the old channels can now carry multiple programs, though, so the
number of channels that one can receive is effectively much higher, but
sometimes you just can't receive a channel that you should be able to
receive.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

I forgot to mention that I did find between 33 to 35 channels. Now of
course this is good! However, sadly, it did not find the CBS or ABC Network
affiliates. It did find some interesting channels though which would make
the cord cut worthwhile as I like Movies and there's a World Channel and was
surprised to find Court TV and a few others.
Thanks!

I don't know anything about the antenna you got, but I tried to cut the cord
a few years ago & tried to go with an antenna, &, I got a wopping 3
channels. I live in the high desert of Southern California.

Fire TV Model
Hello everyone,
I just subscribed to this list so if this is an old topic, please pardon a
repeat question or issue!
I really would like to cut the CableTV cord and save about $100 worth of
cable TV costs per month where there's only a few channels that interest me
and some of which I can find from other sources.
I ordered an amplified antenna. Unfortunately, the model I ordered doesn't
have a switch that I can readily find on the amplifier to take it out of the
circuit. So I scanned with the amplifier in-line and then I manually
removed the amplifier and scanned again with no real difference.
I purchased this indoor TV antenna from Amazon for around $20 after a
discount. It is the
TV Antenna - Latest Amplified HD Digital Indoor Antenna Long 200 Miles Range
HDTV Antenna - 17ft Coax Cable Indoor Antenna for 4K Local Channels -
Support from All Television
4.9 out of 5 stars 14 ratings
The antenna is a current year model for indoor use and claims to have a chip
to filter out what I'd refer to as intermod from FM and other RF signals.
Since I live in Northern Virginia which is a very hot area in terms of much
in the way of active Radio Frequency transmissions from everything
imaginable, reception is challenging without an external antenna. However,
I am restricted by Condo Association rules as to what I can place outdoors
and attached to my town home or yes, I would prefer an outdoor antenna.
I have had a couple of other TVs in the past 10 or so years which had
seemingly better reception and these were digital TVs as well so I'm curious
if anyone has observed reception issues with the Toshiba FireTV models?
I am also curious to know what others have experienced with adding an
external indoor antenna to the Toshiba Fire TV and if there's any
recommendations? If this is too off topic, please email me offline.
Thanks!
Amanda
