[Electronics-Talk] need to know how tv and radio reception would be with metal roof

Another alternative is to buy an antenna with a magnetic mount and run the coaxial cable through a window or a specially sealed hole through a wall. The magnetic mount would attach to the roof and the metal from the roof would act as a ground plane.

I believe that there was a concern raised however, that the extra Electro Magnetic Field generated from all of the conductivity of a metal roof, that it is harmful to one's health. That all of that EMF is similar to living near power lines which are also a health hazard.

If one has no other alternative than to live in a trailer or house which has a metal roof, one has to live where they can.

It is really hard to answer this question with the information that we have. Unless one is going to stop installing a metal roof if reception is going to be bad, it makes more sense to wait and see what problems exist and whether some kind of antenna is needed. If the concern is over-the-air TV, that will likely be affected but even that may depend upon the direction from which the TV signal comes and the shape of the roof. Even if the signal strength is still good, the roof may reflect signals causing multi-path interference. In the old days, this caused shadows on TV pictures, but digital TV is less impacted by this as is HD reception on FM. However, this could still make analog FM reception worse. If a house has aluminum or stainless steel siding, or if it has an exterior that overlays a wire mesh, many of these problems are probably already occurring.

If the location of the TV or Radio in question is in a second story room where the ceiling slopes down, putting one right up inside the metal roof, there will be a greater impact on reception than if one is on the story below. A TV or FM antenna in the attic will likely be impacted since the antenna will now be more or less surrounded by the metal roof.

It's hard to really predict this without knowing more, though.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

The geek squad at Best Buy is really pretty good and they know the local area. If you find the right person, that would probably be a good direction

Hey don't shoot the messenger, this is what I've heard from different people. She eventually died, whether it was her obstinate attitude or something else.
