[Electronics-Talk] For what it’s worth, HD Radio

Hi Tracy,

I haven’t had the radio very long but I played it for a number of hours and it continues to play nicely for me! The batteries weren’t new which is impressive! It has been described to be a battery hog but I think it does very well for a portable HD radio. I have one of the Sparc talking portable HD radio units and that is a battery hog! I had to take the batteries out annd put them back in again before playing the Sparc radio again! Our public radio station now has four streams. I have to find that radio to get a better idea on how it really works! The HDR14 is much better on batteries than the Sparc. They recommend the batteries should be removed if you won’t be playing it for a while! So far, I’m very pleased!

Hi Jim.
How is the battery life on the small portable radio? I've bought some recently that ate batteries at a ridiculous rate. I think it was because they had a lighted screen or some such, but I'm not sure.
I have an old Sony portable radio that looks a lot like the one I had as a kid a long time ago. It's great and it doesn't eat batteries, but it won't last forever.

Hi all,

I haven’t posted in a while!

I recently purchased two new hd radios from Sangean! These are not talking radios but they are high performance radios and they are simple to operate! They look and feel like traditional radios since the AM loop is inside the radio and a telescopic whip is used for FM. Both radios have been available for a while but they are still current!

The first is the Sangean HDR14. It is a pocket or travel size radio which runs on 3 double A batteries. The small speaker sounds good for a small radio! I compare the AM band in the HDR14 to my CC skywave radio! They are very close! Sometimes I think the Sangean has the edge! It is very good on FM. I don’t need to extend the whip to hear all the HD streams here! It comes with an AC adapter.

The second radio is the HDR16. It is a larger portable with two round speaker grills in the front for stereo sound. It operates on 4 C batteries. It comes with an AC adapter. The carrying handle folds into the top of the radio. I’d compare the AM reception of the HDR16 to my CC radio plus or whatever it is called today! If not exactly the same, it is a good runner up! The FM band reception is excellent! I don’t need to extend the whip to hear all hd radio streams here. One can find reviews on both radios on youtube. I highly recommend both radios!

Jim
