Or should we change the format to link just the title of the Tidbit? We need your help in deciding the answer to a question that could impact the way in which future issues of Top Tech Tidbits are delivered. If you are a Top Tech Tidbits reader, please help us by casting a vote. Our question is this. Should Top Tech Tidbits continue to include the actual link text for each Tidbit? Or should we change the format to link just the title of the Tidbit? Changing the format to link just the title of the Tidbit would cut the character count for the entire newsletter nearly in half, which would not just make Tidbits more deliverable from a spam filter perspective, but would also give us a lot more room to grow different sections of the publication. That said, if doing this breaks the reading experience for even a handful of readers, I'm not sure we could justify going forward with it. Hence this Quick Poll. We need to understand how many readers, if any, still fall back on the native link text in order to read an article. This would mean that you do not click links within the newsletter, but instead manually copy and paste them into a web browser. Examples of both the current and new formats below. Same Tidbit. Two different structures. Both lead to https://www.toptechtidbits.com. Please share your thoughts with us using the Click-To-Vote Links below: Example A) Current Tidbit Structure. Title Not Linked. Native Link Text Included Below This text provides a brief description of the Tidbit titled above. https://www.toptechtidbits.com Example B) New Tidbit Structure. Title Linked. Native Link Text Not Included Below This text provides a brief description of the Tidbit titled above. A.) I vote to keep the actual link text present for each Tidbit. I do not click links within the newsletter. I manually copy and paste them into a web browser. Click-To-Vote Link: https://bit.ly/ttt-poll864-a B.) I vote to link just the title of the Tidbit. I always click the links to read Tidbits articles each week. Just over a year later, on September 23, 2008, HTC released the Dream, running on the Android operating system. Perhaps of greater significance to this magazine's readership, VoiceOver launched in 2009, making smartphones accessible to blind people. Not long after, the Android operating system also began supporting some rudimentary features to assist those with blindness or low vision. From those early days, however, Apple's accessibility provided a truly superior experience, but at a significant financial cost. Back then, iPhone models typically cost significantly more than hardware that runs Android. And honestly, that cost difference has changed little over the intervening years. With the sheer magnitude of tasks that can be performed on a smartphone today — banking, scheduling, communication, ride hailing, navigation, not to mention social engagement on a myriad of social media platforms — the need for equal access for blind people to this technology is paramount: https://nfb.org//images/nfb/publications/bm/bm22/bm2206/bm220611.htm 14) iOS 16 Will Let You Bypass Captchas On Some Apps And Websites When iOS 16 comes out later this fall, you may notice that you don't have to deal with as many annoying CAPTCHAs asking you to slide a puzzle piece or distinguish between a hill and a mountain. That's because Apple's introducing a feature for its iPhones and Macs called Automatic Verification, which let some sites know that you're not a bot without you actually having to do anything: https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/20/23175765/apple-ios-16-captcha-private-access-tokens 15) Tactile Engineering Reveals New Technology To Help The Blind A Lafayette engineering firm has revealed technology that they claim will revolutionize the way blind people learn, work, and play. Tactile Engineering has developed a graphical computer tablet. The tablet includes 3,000 tiny parts that can change and act as interactive braille so users can experience animation. CEO David Schleppenbach said that the focus of this technology is overcome an important challenge; making it available and affordable to as many people as possible: https://www.wlfi.com/news/tactile-engineering-reveals-new-technology-to-help-the-blind/article_58ebb9f6-edd4-11ec-b7a8-1388d420c617.html 16) So Long, Internet Explorer As of June 15th 2022 Microsoft will no longer support the once-dominant browser that legions of web surfers loved to hate — and a few still claim to adore. The 27-year-old application now joins BlackBerry phones, dial-up modems and Palm Pilots in the dustbin of tech history: https://apnews.com/article/internet-explorer-shutting-down-e45abf1df9d34c135e41a01cf7d96c25 17) The Ghost of Internet Explorer Will Haunt the Web for Years | Wired Microsoft's legacy browser may be dead — but its remnants are not going anywhere, and neither are its lingering risks: https://www.wired.com/story/internet-explorer-dead-security-risks/ 18) Enhancements in JAWS 2022.2206.9 | June 2022 A new JAWS update has been released by Freedom Scientific. The ability to export audio and text files are among the improvements: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-reader-for-desktop/id972112040?mt=12 22) Chameleon Version 2.0.0 And finally, there has also been an update to the Chameleon braille display. Echo users can say, "Alexa, I want to talk to a doctor" to be connected with the Teledoc call center, and then a Teledoc health provider will call back through the device. This fully remote service will be available 24/7 for non-emergency needs — like allergies or colds — and will initially be audio-only. For people with insurance, the out-of-pocket cost will vary depending on coverage. 28) Tiger Software Suite is Upgrading If you own a PixBlaster embosser, you are probably already familiar with Tiger Software Suite (TSS) since your embosser came with a free license. If you're not familiar, know that TSS is a popular collection of apps for creating and editing both braille and tactile graphics. Now TSS is offering a paid upgrade from version 7 to 8 and bringing with it a whole lot of improvements! Please note the cost of the upgrade is not Federal Quota eligible and that the upgrade is entirely optional. If you choose not to update, you'll be able to continue using TSS 7 the same as you did before. Nothing will change about how you use your embosser; you just won't get the features listed below: https://www.aph.org/attention-tiger-software-suite-is-upgrading/ 29) Talking Online Crossword Puzzles If you're a crossword puzzle fan, and frustrated by the lack of accessibility, you may want to check out https://bgspeaking.com/word-speaking-vocal-crossword. It'll go on being supported on some legacy servers for another seven years, but for all intents and purposes, the browser that led us through the explosion of Web 2.0 will take its place in the technology archives. The sunset of Internet Explorer means that the end is also near for System Access to Go (or SAToGo), the first screen reader that could be launched directly from a web browser with no additional assistance. The web is a different place now than it was in 2007 when we launched SAToGo. Today's web browsers are much more focused on both security and keeping the user in control, as they should be, and it is no longer practical for a website to talk the user through the process of downloading and running a program like SAToGo: https://pneumasolutions.com/the-end-of-an-era/ 12) The Future of System Access | Pneuma Solutions In the wake of our farewell to Internet Explorer, where we announced the coming end of System Access to Go (or SAToGo), there has been some unfortunate confusion about the future of System Access in general. This talk will cover the common threads of those disclosures, the value of neurodivergent team members, and the experiences positive and negative that neurodivergent applicants face in looking for work within the tech sector and for technology roles in other industries. We'll be sharing what in the interview processes triggered negative outcomes and what behaviors and processes facilitated positive outcomes. We'll be making suggestions for changes hiring professionals can make as well as accommodations that can be asked for and should be expected. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well. What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, affordable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice!
