We were attempting to connect via TeamViewer because that was the client's choice of software. Perhaps because it is free and perhaps because we had successfully used it to connect in previous sessions. Not so this time. The client could not use NVDA, Dolphin QS with Supernova or Windows Narrator to access the TeamViewer application. When the client reached out to these screen reader support groups she was informed by both Dolphin and NVDA that, "the current version of TeamViewer has broken accessibility in their user interface for all screen readers." This incident took place on September 29th 2022. With that, we give you the following article: https://pneumasolutions.com/remote-incident-manager-vs-the-other-players-part-2-rim-vs-teamviewer/ 10) Learn Why And How To Make Your Kiosks Accessible | Mary Jo Barry | Dolphin Computer Access This past year, global reliance on self-service kiosks has grown by leaps and bounds. There is also greater awareness and understanding — both socially and politically — about our need to provide all kiosk users with an equal and accessible experience. If you're just starting to explore accessibility for your self-service kiosk project, we also recommend you check out our blog Make Your Self-Service Kiosk Accessible. There you'll find insight into the positive impacts of showing consideration for the needs of customers with visual impairments. When you make your self-service kiosk accessible, it's a win for your brand and a big win for prospective customers with a disability or neurodiversity: https://blog.yourdolphin.com/blog/learn-why-and-how-to-make-your-kiosks-accessible 11) Google Calendar's New Keyboard Shortcuts Might Not Be For You, But They Are Very Important Android phones are accessible to people across a wide price range, from budget handsets going for a few hundred dollars to flagships for more than a thousand. Thanks to Google's efforts, Android is also evolving into a more accessible platform for people with disabilities. The company's newest effort extends beyond the OS and into its web services. Google Calendar is getting keyboard shortcuts that verbally announce specific details for events: https://www.androidpolice.com/google-calendar-easier-screen-reader-keyboard-shortcuts/ 12) Two New Power Toys Useful For Office Users Two new Windows Power Toys are especially useful for many Microsoft Office users. For my circumstances and use case, I can roughly appraise these as having some potential utility, no utility, and some curiosity appeal. However, digging deep in to the new iPhones' technical specifications, I found something that piqued my interest and which I thought could potentially offer me significant utility, and that is their support for "precision dual-frequency GPS:" https://applevis.com/blog/exploring-whether-dual-frequency-gps-iphone-14-pro-makes-meaningful-difference-real-world 14) Are Braille Bugs Biting You In iOS 16? Here Is Some Bug Repellent To Help | Scott Davert | Helen Keller National Center for Deafblind Youths and Adults As many may already be aware, iOS 16 was released on September 12th 2022. For details about many of the new features and changes, please see my article What's New In iOS 16 Accessibility For Blind And DeafBlind Users. Along with every major release come new bugs, and iOS 16 is no exception. For a list of bugs present as detected by the AppleVis Editorial Team, you can visit the blog post entitled The Accessibility Bugs Introduced and Resolved in iOS 16 for Blind and Low Vision Users. Though Apple recently released iOS 16.0.2 which addresses some VoiceOver issues, it did not address a number of bugs related to the editing of text. Though not all users are experiencing these bugs, many are. They seem most common on the iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE 3, but users on the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 12 Mini are also reporting these shortcomings. The purpose of this posting is to discuss workarounds for some of these bugs: https://www.helenkeller.org/hknc/bug-repellent-help 15) Freedom Scientific October 2022 Training Events The Freedom Scientific training team offers ongoing opportunities for you to join in live training sessions and advance your skills. One day he noticed I had brought in my new-ish laptop, and his unexpected request — "can I look at your laptop?" — temporarily flabbergasted me. Naturally there wasn't much he could do with it, so he gave it a once over with his fingers to understand the keyboard layout, and that was that. I still think about this experience from time to time, and the most obvious lesson is that my paradigm for using a computer didn't map well to his abilities and disability. The folks at Microsoft are thinking about this problem, too, and they're doing a lot of work to make technology work for more users, like the excellent Xbox Adaptive Controller: https://hackaday.com/2022/09/30/microsoft-wants-you-to-help-with-assistive-tech/ 17) Talking Points | A Bi-Weekly Livestream | BlindShell USA Talking Points is a bi-weekly livestream where you can learn everything about the BlindShell Classic 2 accessible phone, meet other BlindShell users, ask questions, discover tips and tricks, explore your favorite applications, learn every day hacks to help you streamline your communication skills, and much more. Read on for how to register. This course teaches you everything you need to know about using an iPhone, both with and without VoiceOver, while offering particular emphasis on the fundamentals of navigating with the VoiceOver screen reader. Learn how to set up a new device, how to navigate, how to enter text, how to download and work with apps, how to communicate with others, and so much more, all with VoiceOver. This year's class promises to be our best one yet, and it's still completely free! The course will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning Monday, October 3, 2022 at 2PM Eastern Time. All sessions will be held in Zoom, with sessions also being posted to YouTube for those who are unable to attend. We strongly recommend that you do attend live sessions whenever possible, as you'll have opportunities to ask questions and try the various concepts we teach. If you will be attending live, please plan to join from a secondary device if at all possible. While this is not a requirement, it will make it easier for you to try what you've learned, while still listening to the session. To register, please use the below registration link, complete the form, and you're all set. You will receive an email confirmation from Zoom with the meeting join info within a few minutes of your registration. Please note that due to the need for registration, and the way that process is being handled, it is not ideal for us to add each live teaching session to our TTJ Public Calendar. Rather, you can quickly add all sessions to your own calendar. To do this, simply locate the Add to Calendar attachment link near the bottom of the Zoom confirmation email and click or tap it (double-tap if you are using VoiceOver). It's not just audio or text only PC games anymore either, they also cover mobile games for both iOS and Android, games for smart assistance like the Amazon Echo, playable mainstream titles (including those for the console), and even mods written by the community which make existing games that would otherwise be inaccessible, possible for us to enjoy. New rules also will require broadcasters, cable systems and other Emergency Alert System (EAS) participants to transmit the Internet-based version of alerts to the public when available, rather than transmit the legacy version of alerts: https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/business-and-law/fcc-gives-the-ok-to-more-eas-improvements 11) Florida Outreach Center for the Blind Announces New Website We are extremely proud to announce our brand-new web site that reflects the Florida Outreach Center for the Blind along with its programs, services, outreach, and community events. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards address accessibility for permanent amusement rides. The next webinar in the U.S. Access Board's free monthly series will take place October 6 from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. (ET) and review scoping and technical provisions for amusement rides. For newly designed and constructed rides, scoping provisions provide the option to choose the type of access that is suitable for a particular ride or experience. Three options for providing accessibility onto a ride device include a wheelchair space on the ride, a ride seat designed for transfer, or a transfer device. This session will review the technical provisions for each type of access required on rides. Additionally, U.S. Access Board staff Bill Botten and Bobby Stinnette will address requirements for accessible routes, que lines, parking and passenger loading areas, signage, sales, and service counters. Visit Great Lakes ADA Center's AccessibilityOnline webpage for more information or to register. All webinars include video remote interpreting (VRI) and real-time captioning. Questions can be submitted in advance of the session or can be posed during the live webinar. Webinar attendees can earn continuing education credits. The conference will be held virtually so you can present from anywhere worldwide. Here are some other important things to know about speaking at WordPress Accessibility Day: We will provide an accessible speaking experience — the presentation platform will be screen reader-friendly, and we will have captions and sign language interpretation available for speakers as needed. You don't have to have speaking experience! We would love to have first-time speakers present and can support you in presenting as needed. You don't have to be an "expert" or have any special certifications. Anyone with something to share related to accessibility on the web or in WordPress is invited to apply. You can share your journey learning about accessibility or your experience as a person with a disability even if you don't think you've reached the end of that journey yet. Your topic doesn't have to be explicitly WordPress related. While we want some talks specific to WordPress and want to encourage developer-level presentations, not all talks need to be specific to WordPress. General website accessibility talks with broad applications for websites of all types and people of all levels of technical abilities are welcome. If you have an idea for a talk to share your knowledge or experiences about the intersection of WordPress and accessibility, we'd love to hear it! https://wpaccessibility.day/weekend-plans-apply-to-speak-at-wp-accessibility-day/ 13) AT Gifts for the Holidays | Technology User Group, Maryland State Library November 5th 2022 | 7AM PT, 8AM MT, 9AM CT, 10AM ET, 2PM GMT | Our annual look at gadgets and gizmos that will make your holiday season a successful one.
