[Electronics-Talk] Optacons

Richard Oehm is still repairing Optacons, and using those that can't be
repaired for parts. Several years ago, I had him replace the battery on my
Optacon with an electric plug. It's not as portable as it was with a
battery, but I wasn't carrying it around anyway, and it works fine. Amazing
something so old can still be in excellent condition.
Richard's email is oehmelec at comcast.net. He's somewhere in California, San
Jose, I think, but I couldn't find his address without doing a longer search
than I have time for now.

I don't use my Optacon as much as I used to, but it still comes in handy.
Mainly, I use it to look at print music when my music translator goes wrong.
I've also used it to look at knitting charts which I had transcribed, but
the transcriber made some mistakes.

Subject: [Electronics-Talk] Optacons

Hi all,

I have several Optacons in my closet that haven't been used in many years.
With Open Book, PictureSmart and the various scanning apps that I have on my
iPhone, I doubt that I'll ever use the Optacons again even if I wanted to.
The batteries won't take a charge anymore, and there may be one in the bunch
that took a static charge to the tactile array. There used to be a guy out
here in Los Angeles, Leo Drell, who used to refurbish Optacons, but I seem
to recall hearing somewhere that he's no longer doing that. Does anyone know
of someone who is refurbishing them these days? Perhaps I can get in touch
with him and see if he'd like these old units for parts.

Thanks,

Tom
