Also bare in mind they are starting to lock down the nest eco system with subscription fees. They haven't done it with the nest thermostat yet but I bet they will.

I know most people are looking for a easy process to entry to an accessible thermostat and just buying and installing nest or ecobee gets you there. I'm just one who really doesn't like the whole IOT out to a internet server model. Google already showed face by killing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen. We know they will kill the others in due time. What the open market is upset at right now is that all dumb stats keep working for good lord how long but nest choose to kill them! Just know it will be killed at some point!

Not sure how accessible homeassistant is but those who are tech savy and want all their devices local rather then internet cloud connected can try homeassistant. I use that at home and am trying to move as much to it thru direct local connections. I know the ecobee can be local connected to homeassistant thru a home kit bridge. not all cloud devices have a way to connect direct but a good deal of them do.

Thanks,

Google is ending support for first, second, and third generation nest thermostats. These were released between 2010 and 2014. Current models are not impacted.

A bit of googling will tell you more.
