Hello All!
October is “meet the Blind” month and a great motivator to educate the
public about blind awareness. Below are some ideas, created by the
FABS advocacy committee, for you to get involved and help spread the
word on blind awareness! And please note that if you cannot do
something for the month of October, it is perfectly okay to do one of
the ideas in November: for blind awareness is a topic that should be
continuously spread among our towns & communities!

Ideas:
Take A Walk in My Shoes
-Have a friend, associate, family member, classmate, or co-worker that
is not normally around you daily, to spend a day with you. Allow them
to observe and see how you as an individual without sight handle
various tasks. You can have the person try doing some of the tasks the
way you do; but it is important that you do not have them to try
something that places themselves or others in harm’s way. Please do
not ask someone to cross the road or operate a hot stove with their
eyes close: for such things require training by a certified
instructor!

Take a Ride With Me
-Challenge someone to travel by public transportation or Para transit
with you to their destination instead of using their car. (You can
give this challenge to one of your classes for the month.)

I’m More Like You Than You Know
-Take time to present/talk to elementary classes, junior high classes,
high school classes, college classes, or social groups. Share your
story and information about blind awareness to help them understand
that we are individuals and the stereotypes are false. You can
demonstrate and explain the proper techniques of assisting an
individual that is blind and/or how you do some of the same activities
that they do.

The Cinema Through Our Eyes
-Ask a local movie theater or your school (when they show a movie) if
you could set up an information table and ask the customers to view
(at least the previews) under blind fold. Ask the individuals to come
back by the table and share their experience and ask questions if they
have any.

Good luck in spreading the word!
Jermesa Lee
