[Fabs] benefits of becoming an active member

Hello Roanna

The question is easily answered. Being a member of the NFBF or FABS has
countless benefits. As a former NFBF scholarship recipient, current
Vice-President of my local chapter, current member of the Board of Directors
of the NFBF, and current Board Member of FABS, an endless network of blind
individuals are a phone call away.

FABS is a dynamic, goal oriented, and joyous group of students who have
revolutionized what means to be a blind student. This close knit family
depends on each other for support on school matters which can, and will
provide guidance on how to approach situations that new college students as
well as high school students have not faced before. What is most rewarding
is that if we do not have the answer, we can reach out to a 50,000
membership group which can advise us on what is the best way to handle the
troubles that we are facing.

School matters is not the only topic of conversation. FABS is a division of
the NFBF and plays an integrate role in our state affiliate. We actively
participate during our state convention as well as in the national
convention. We assist the affiliate in any way we can. We are known as the
busiest and loudest group of members, yet we respect, admire, and follow the
philosophy of the NFBF; which is "changing what it means to be blind" and
"live the life we want".

The NFB is not an organization speaking for the blind; it is the blind
speaking for themselves. We speak to congressmen, congresswomen, and
senators in Washington D.C. on topics that are important to our cause. We
travel to Tallahassee and participate during the Vision Summit; we speak to
agencies that provide assistance to blind clients, and work closely with
local officials and municipalities to make sure that the blind community is
not discriminated upon.

We are a dedicated group of individuals; we take time off our demanding
schedule to meet and to assure that the NFBF and FABS is an emergent
organization in our state. I cordially invite you to attend our upcoming
meeting this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. so you can have a close look at what you
are missing out on.

Best

Dear Students and other Members,

What are the benefits of becoming an active member in Fabs and
the Nfb of florida? I understand that writing periodic updates
about my independence and other blindness skills does not
constitute active membership. Due to my class schedule and other
factors I do not currently have the time to dedicate to active
membership.

Hey Roanna,
Hope all is well. I just wanted to follow up with you about the benefits of
becoming an active member of FABS and/ or your local chapter. One major
benefit is the relationships you will build with other members. We often
refer to each other as family because of the close bonds we have developed
with each other. If I ever have any concerns or need support in any
situation (life school, etc), I know I can always count on my NFB family to
be their to support me 100%.
Another benefit of becoming an active member is that you will have the
opportunity to experience some amazing opportunities such as attending a
local or national convention, The Nfb Washington Seminar, Chapter events and
fundraisers. I have experienced these events and have grown both personally
and professionally as a result. For instance, after attending my first
national convention, I realized that my goals and dreams were possible
because other blind people just like me were successful. I met blind
doctors, lawyers, business owners and entrepreneurs. This experience
allowed me to see that I can live the life I want to live no matter what
obstacles I may face.
Lastly, becoming an active member within the NFB will allow you to
participate firsthand in changing what it means to be blind. Every and
anyone can help make a difference in our society. Their is no greater joy
than knowing that you changed someone's life or contributed to new laws that
will impact blind people forever.

Good afternoon,
Thank you aside for giving all that you have learned. I am sure you're not
going to be the only one that can state what are some of the benefits.
