This thread brought to mind a lengthy discussion a number of us had one night  by the fireplace at the National center between Dr. Maurer, myself and a couple of us who have been trained in the classics and are both very familiar with the Socratic method.  Marc had just read some of the later roman poets such as Catulus, Plautus and Terrence.  Some of the platonic writings also indicate what was going on in Greek society and the Latin poets mentioned earlier Roman society respectively.  There is an amazing parallel between those writings and what's going on today.  I gave him the names of those authors so he could look up their writings the net since a lot of those texts are freely available.  There are quite a number of these writings on disk as well.
