Hi Peter and all -- I oppose the death penalty mmainly because in too many
instances the convicted person is later proved not guilty -- by DNA and
such. One example is a guy who wrote a book about how he was convicted
because of a string of circumstancial evidence, all of which put him at the
wrong place at the wrong time and in a bad mood. When he got out finally he
said the hardest part of the whole thing was that his mother never lived to
see his conviction overturned. Very riveting story -- but he was on "death
row".
This is of course not the rule but the exception, however even the
possibility of it happening make the death penalty unthinkable.
Now as for the guilty, yes, Christ said something about loving the "least of
these thy brethren". Is putting a serial killer to death something that is
done in love, or vengeance? Well, you can carry loving the guilty man too
far -- some people need to be incarcerated to protect other citizens, but
could it help the guilty man's soul in some way to suffer death? Some think
so, but I don't. Someone has to carry out the punishment, and that as you
say is taking a life.
(Actually sitting for decades in a max security prison with only hardened
criminals around you could be considered worse punishment than getting a
shot in the arm.)
One thing I wonder in all this. Of those who want to eliminate capital
punishment, how many of them are also pro choice? You are going from the
termination of an innocent developing baby versus an adult hardened
criminal. Well, the people on this list are probably all pro life, so
it's a no-brainer, but people do differ in what they believe.
One thing: is there an innocent child inside everyone, including the death
row convict? Since people can't see what's in a person's heart, only God
knows, and so perhaps for that reason the death penalty is wrong.

To all willing to listen,
Most faiths in the United States and perhaps the world are opposed
to the death penalty of any form. In this spirit, I would like to
inform you about a site that I found in my very own state of Alabama.
It has compiled a small listing of organizations that you may actively
support of your own free will whether donations, volunteering, holding
vigiles or whatever to oppose capital punishment in any form or for
any reason against it for whatever purpose ethical, religious or
whatevery ou may have. It's amoral eye for an eye from the times
before Jesus and most important religious leaders of modern era
including Jesus Christ and other such religious messiahs in your
respected religions. It's a human rights violation that this occurs at
all in this supposed great nation of ours. Lots of other nations are
appalled that we even consider such a measure of draconian means.
Where is the compassion for human dignity? It says in the Bible be
mercyful to get mercy or though shall not judge lest you be judged.
Moreover, though shall not murder, which is exactly what is happening
to sometimes even innocent civilians. Here is the small list websites
to advocate against the capital punishment in the U.S.A!
