                  Distractions and Priorities

                  Wednesday, March 02, 2011

"They were bringing children to Him so that He might
touch them; but the disciples rebuked them."Mark 10:13 NASB
Jesus had faced intense questions from some
Pharisees-questions about the Law and other weighty subjects. Eager to
continue this discussion, His disciples followed up with questions of their
own.
Suddenly, they were interrupted. Parents began
bringing their children to Jesus, hoping He would touch them. The disciples
were annoyed, and rebuked these adults for their interruption. But Jesus
became "indignant" and told the disciples, "Permit the children to come to
Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
Jesus did not view the actions of these parents
as an interruption, but as an opportunity for ministry. In His sight, the
children and their parents had as much right to His time as did the
disciples.
The disciples may have thought they were unique,
deserving special attention. But Jesus demonstrated that everyone is
important to Him, and He is ready to spend time with anyone who comes to
Him.
He also used the presence of these children to
teach His disciples about the importance of a childlike faith: "Whoever
does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all."
Just a few verses later, He emphasized His point by addressing His
disciples as "children."
How easily we can become like the
disciples-focused on ourselves and our own projects and priorities, while
blind to the needs of others. But we need to remember the example set by
Jesus. Instead of being preoccupied with the business of life, we must
realize that everyone is important in God's Kingdom, and we must be
sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Today, seek to serve God with humility and a
childlike faith. Be ready to let Him use you in the lives of others.

Father, I humble myself before You. Open my eyes to the
needs of others. Help me to be kind and a good listener. I'm Your servant,
