[Faith-talk] An Addition to the Post on Claude Ely from Joshua

Ryan, do you know what the documentary is called? Through my school's
library and blackboard, we can get a number of PBS videos; even older ones
that are just on video. I think the community college even has an old
fashioned VCR for videos in the library media room.

I think I'd enjoy that documentary.

Brother Paul, I may take you up on that offer. I never thought there
was anything substantive on those Internet chat services, but as long
as you're doing a discussion on old-time music, I'll be glad to
participate. Although the earliest recordings date back to only the
1950s, I have heard the aforementioned style of sacred harp music. It
dates back to the late 1800s (possibly earlier than that) and usually
revolved around a hymnal known as the Sacred Harp. Several years back,
our local PBS station put out a documentary on it. As the film
recounts, the typical sacred harp choir would stand in squares
delegated by vocal abilities with the choir leader in the center
square. According to historians interviewed by the film, the Sacred
Harp hymnal ranked second in importance to the Bible in early southern
congregations. I don't know if this film ever came out on DVD
otherwise I'd track it down and upload it somewhere
