[Faith-talk] some updates on Nick, and my day summarized

Hello
I know many people who live in group homes including some blind people. I
do not know anything about Nick, but in general they are people who, because
of complicated disabilities are unable to live safely on their own. They
may have medical issues that require attention they can not do without help.
They may have issues of mental illness or autism which affect their ability
to make decisions. And, depending othe staffing of the group home there are
many people who are not happy where they live. However, there are many
people who are very happy. Staffing is a constant issue in group homes and
problems such as staff not having English as a first language is common. A
constant and never changing staff of people having various personalities is
common and there are many dynamics. Also the corporation or company who
runs the group home can have input which residents may not always be happy
with. And let's face it, when you are living with a group of people who all
have various disabilities including both psychological and sometimes
physical issues can make life tense. And if a person, for example, lives
where they do not have their own bedroom but must be with someone they have
no real private space. The staff who work in homes are paid very poorly.
So you can see that there are a number of issues.
Before I could say anything one way or another I'd need to know many
variables about Nick's particular situation and knowing them on this list
would be a violation of his privacy and I would not want to go there.
Maureen

Hi Kendra (or anyone else),
I'm a bit confused about something I'm trying to understand. It
seems like people live in group homes but don't want to?
Why exactly do they go to them in the first place? People don't
seem to want to go in them, but it seems just as equally
difficult to leave.
Do they use them while searching for jobs or apartments?
Or are they sent there against their will by family members?
Before this discussion Iead never known about blind people having
to live in them.
Vejas

Hi all!
I also like the idea where we bring the media into it. They are
the best at informing the public. If that doesn't scar off that
group home into treating Nick better, than a law suit and a
protest in front of that group home sertainly will do the trick.
No one, I don't care what their dissabillity deserves to be
treated like garbage. I know what the group home system is like
because my long time best friend lives in one. I personally
dislike the group home system. There is too much garbage and
totally off the wall haywire leagleese attached to that system.
There are good group homes out there but they are very hard to
find.

Dear list,
An update or two on Nick: he's ok, but I don't know what will
happen next. I've been in contact with Vallerie Yingling, and we
were supposed to talk on this day at about 3 EST, but we
couldn't, so I emailed her a bunch of information so she can look
at that. I was referred to Donna Prime, president of the Iowa
affiliate. I also emailed a reporter from the Des Moines
Register last night, but I don't think we can get this in the
paper. Honestly, I'd like to know if there's any thing anyone
knows about getting something in the paper, and what that could
do to help Nick get the care he deserves, or rather, the rights
plus care. We spoke from my friend Haley's Skype last night, and
Haley is his girlfriend in Illinois. Just a side note: some
stuff I did today included going out to Job Club at the Atlantis
building in Denver. I learned stuff about resumes that is really
surprising, and I feel more secure about my employment future.
So, just a praise report on this: I'm having fun at my
internship, and I'm having a lot of fun with Outlook 2007, which
I would normally hate with a passion when it comes to multiple
email addresses, which I find useful with Thunderbird, but I find
that my boss/instructor is really gentle and patient, and I'm
surprised he puts up with me. Smiles.
Anyway, keep the prayers coming, I'm making some headway in
making sure Nick is out of that group home and in a better state.
Some of you might have wanted a more factual statement concerning
this young man's disabilities. He has little to no useful
vision, has been blind for a while, and has the use of one hand
at times. HE has some oversensitivity to pain, a classic symptom
of Autism, and Autism and blindness sometimes go hand in hand. I
have friends who are autistic and don't live in said
circumstances, and they're all awesome. So I don't see why this
has to happen at all. Thank you all for your continued prayers
and support.
Beth
