[Faith-talk] A Teistmony on Healing

I agree, not being defensive is the key. Erika, I love how you handled the situation. I am different because I allow people to pray for my healing, but I don’t see it as pity and I actually want to be healed. The desire has been placed in my heart ever since I was little, and of course I have no problem being visually impaired but I want complete healing.

I realize there are many who don’t want this, and that’s OK because we all have different purposes. Mind is healing and that’s why, perhaps, I have that desire and allow others to pray for me when the occasion warrants.

I don’t tend to go up to people on the street and ask to pray for them just because they have a physical condition. If I am talking to someone, and I feel led to pray for them because of a certain situation, I will ask if I can pray for them but I always ask what they want prayer for. If they tell me they want prayer for healing, I do that. If they have a situation they want prayer for, I pray for that. The key is to be led by the Holy spirit, not by some human condition that may pity us. If we are truly led by the Spirit, we will often pray for the right things.

God bless,
Christine

I think many people sincerely want to do good by offering to pray for someone but out of ignorance don’t know how to ask or assume that the most visible need or difference is the one that needs fixing. There are some churches that teach that God does not allow his people to suffer like non believers and so any kind of sickness, poverty, etc. is an external indicator of a lack of faith or internal sin. I don’t think those people have read the entire Bible. If you have ever encountered people who believe that way, you would understand why someone might feel like they need to defend themselves.

If I have the time, I explain that I do believe that God could heal me, but that I don’t think he is calling me to even ask for that. If it were something he wanted to do, he would go ahead and do it or he would lead me to pray for it. I find the less defensive I get, the more I am able to educate and gently challenge the misconceptions of my well-meaning brothers and sisters.

Because I was aware of the Scriptures relating to people with disabilities and how Christ reacted, I could sway them into understanding that I was not any different and how Christ had hung out with all the outcasts it was OK to be different. They agreed with me that the Pharisees had more issues. I thought that was pretty funny. Being able to come back at them with scripture seems to help. I did it in a calm and social way so it was a conversation. I think I just got lucky that this person wanted to listen. This world is full of people who don't listen to anyone else except the tape playing in their head.
