Hello and greetings to my fellow saints of the Most High God, no matter
where you live in this wide world of ours. I hope that your day is
going well, by God's matchless grace and His providential care.

Thanks to the few who replied to my question about not receiving the
commentary on the book of Joel, today's column will be on this book.
Unfortunately the original writer of this column doesn't wish to
address a certain area of the book, but here it what we have for you today.

Joel

Question: Who wrote this book, and what themes and issues does it deal with?

Answer: Neither Joel nor his time are identified in the Bible. His
message, however, is clear. The prophet sees a great cloud of locusts
that devastates the Holy Land as a warning of an even more devastating
invasion by foreign enemies, associated with the coming day of the
Lord. Joel warns that a devastating judgment must purge God's people
before history's end, when the Lord will provide the blessing that had
been promised centuries before to Abraham's descendants.

Question: What is the "day of the Lord' that Joel mentions five times
in his short book?

Answer: The "day of the Lord" or "That day" are technical theological
phrases used to identify any period of time in which God acts directly
or indirectly, to accomplish a specific purpose in His dealings with
His Old Testament people. They are most frequently used by the
prophets to speak of events to take place at history's end. These
events include devastating judgments, as described by Joel and Amos,
and a subsequent restoration of blessing as the covenant promises given
to Abraham are fulfilled.

And there you have it for the prophet Joel. Next week, Lord willing,
we will be looking at two books. I hope that you all have benefited
from reading these weekly columns so far. Even though they may not
have addressed specific answers that you might have had, at least
you're all getting something rather than nothing at all. Until then
may the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob just keep us safe, individually
and collectively, in these last days in which we live. Your Christian
