[Faith-talk] prayer request my future and direction and figuring out what to do with my life

Hello Andrew, have you thought about taking any free courses at Hadley
School for the blind? You could take courses in assistive technology, brail,
music, independent living skills and more. I will have to say that the
majority of my skills have been self taught, I mean, I didn't sit down in a
class room to learn them. I have made it a goal since about the age of 22 to
learn as much as I could in life in regards to my faith, history,
technology, philosophy, mental wellness, parenting, speaking and writing
clear and affectively and about physical health. I had to push myself to do
these things, I didn't even have access to the internet for the first years
of this journey so you are probably miles ahead of me. If a person doesn't
have goals they will get nowhere in life, I am not talking about dreams and
desires, I am talking about real written down goals that are realistic and
doable. I told myself years ago that if another blind person could do
something then I had just as much of a chance of learning it. I hear a lot
of blind people talk about how their parents, family and friends are holding
them back somehow, in my case my mom left the state a year after I lost my
site at age 15 and I was left to try and survive however I could, I stayed
at different people's homes, pinched pennies and learned to crawl and then
walk and then even jog a little. It would had been nice IMO to have a parent
who was actually there, somebody who said, you need to go to school today,
you need to get to bed, somebody who did stuff like keep the electricity and
heat on, food in the refrigerator, you know all of those little things. I
didn't have time to even think about poor me because stupid me went out and
got a girl pregnant and was a father at age 16 and to crown my stupidity by
the time I was 21 I had 4 children, that's all over twenty plus years ago
now, but I had to figure out how to put food on the table and a roof over
their head and I would have given a fortune to pressed rewind and be sitting
in my mom's home, warming up spaghetti O's in the microwave, browsing
YouTube and watching net flicks, but that wasn't my lot. I never even went
to an NFB meeting until this last year and I had never even put my hands on
a computer and heard the crazy voice of MR Jaws the screen reader until I
was almost twenty six years old,11 years after I lost my site. The point is
that, anything is possible once you start to focus. If you're a member of
any talking book libraries, start to read biographies of other blind people
and become inspired through their challenges, failures, and successes.
