Good question! Only God knows this answer I think. :-) But I think it's because some people have never seen someone with a disability. Other people have only seen a certain kind of disability, like when someone has muscular dystrophy or Down syndrome. These folks generally don't live independently and therefore we're thought of just like them. In history, we went to a "special " school or were put into institutions where we could be "with our own kind". Kids with disabilities going to school and living a regular life like anyone else is a pretty new idea. I started kindergarten in 1976–77 school year. I was the first disabled kid to go to public school in my town! The law allowing the kids to go to public schools was passed in 1975 here in the states.
