[Faith-talk] Terminology

Welcome Nick,

My name is Jenny. I'm fortunate, I'm gonna Latter Day Saints or Mormon. And, our library app has all of the Scriptures old New Testament book of Mormon doctrine covenants and pearl great price and all of them or an audio. We use the King James version of the Bible though as obviously the authority and main book in our church. I love the King James version though. I didn't before to me, for some weird reason. It takes me out of this world. This crazy insane world that we live in. And it brings me back into a classic quiet peaceful world. Where no one talks that way except in that Bible. Now, with the invention of the iPhone :-) if there's a definition of something I don't understand. Like some kind of a house or something that is named something else in the book. I can look up that reference or the definition of the word. That helps a lot.

All of our Sunday school books and videos, and other stuff that relates to the Mormon church is also on that app. Our high school children from freshman to seniors go through what's called seminary. And actually reminds me of something a priest or pastor might go through. At six in the morning they have to be at the church. They have to study well the Old Testament is the freshman the New Testament is a sophomore the book of Mormon is the junior and a doctor in covenant is to give me the senior so, by the time they get through all that they're pretty well versed on a lot of scripture.

I never got to go when I was a kid, I couldn't get up that early, and if I did, I couldn't stay awake during school. So, I didn't go. Also, our app. Any Sunday school or any app at all or any material at all, if the if the scripture is cited in the lesson, it's a link, so, when you use that link, it brings up that particular verse or verses and then you press back and then you go right back to where you started. So, that's been quite cool.

I've never been able to do that ever in my life. So it's so liberating.

I couldn't go to seminary or Institute which is for the college kids are older adults. So, i'm doing the stuff now. Even though I'm a 43-year-old woman, it's still gets me a lot more in depth of the Scriptures then just Sunday school and reading them. So, I'm doing that, I wanted to do it every day. But, I'm a slacker I admit it :-)

Again, welcome,

Jenny

I use the Braille Note and Bookshare, and there are plenty of Bookshare resources for both reading and studying the Bible. Quite a few versions are on there, including NIV, KJV, NKJV, ESV, and my personal favorite, NRSV. There are lots of commentaries as well - quite a few of them are multi-volume sets, so you have to download the one appropriate for the section you are reading. But John MacArthur has one that is all in one and gives nice succinct yet informative descriptions of context, background, and verse exposition, including a nice intro for every book in the Bible. (Even if you don't agree with all of his theology, it's a good choice.)

> Hi Ashley, there are several ways to study the Bible. Bible Gateway is a very good app if you have a smart phone. But also I believe that as you read you may begin to find more understanding. Here's a way to do this. It's called Lectio Divina, or Divine Reading. Take a passage of Scripture and slowly begin to read it. If something strikes you about that passage of Scripture, read it again. Then begin to think about what you have read. This would be meditating on it. Then begin praying about your thoughts about the Scripture. Perhaps God will bring something to your mind that He wants you to do, or to think about more. This is allowing the Word of God to speak to you, to your heart. This is not really Bible study per se, but it is a way of allowing Scripture to speak to you, to your heart.
