[Faith-Talk] nfb philosophy and faith beliefs

I would like to share a few comments on this.

The NFB tag line "Live the Life You Want" may sound self-centered, but I
don't think it has to be inconsistent with Christianity. It is true that we
are often called in the Scriptures to put others ahead of ourselves and even
deny ourselves totally, but sometimes in the church, sighted or blind, this
self-denial can become self-destructive if it prevents us from seeking the
help we need or keeps us some necessary growth through self-improvement. I
think this is a pitfall we all need to be watchful about.

I would observe that we have free will, and also that we live in a land with
many freedoms as well. Choice means different things to different people,
with or without fait. If we interpret the life we choose to live as being
with faith, then we are in fact living the life we want if we make that
choice. We must remember that both within NFB and America others are free
to choose differently. NFB's purpose is to help all of us exercise those
choices fully. This applies whether that involves a perspective on God or
not. No organization, not even the church, is perfect, but we work through
these vessels to improve the lives of ourselves and others using what ever
light of discernment we have.

Even in the Old Testament choice is offered, as Joshua called on the people
of Israel to choose.

I hope this offers some illumination on the topic.

Linda that is exactly my question because nfb and Christ are both important
to me but he overshadows the nfb for me.

Linda,
I agree with your comments. This could make for an interesting chat.
Take care!

Hi Sheila,

Firstly, Tom Anderson thinks this would be a good topic for a list
conference call, rather than having a string of messages.
What do you all think?

Secondly, I'll weigh in here just to say a couple things. Being a secular
organization, the NFB does not totally line up with what I believe as a
Christian. For example, "Live the life you want"
leaves God out of the equation. It seems errogant to me, but that's the way
of the world. If we are true Christians, we want to live the life God wants
us to live. He can, and often will, stop us from living the life we want if
our will does not line up with His.

There are many things in the NFB I can and do support: Braille, blindness
skills, living independently, mentoring others, networking and being friends
with many in the blindness community, being a positive and good blind role
model, sharing resources I know about to help others in need, etc. The NFB
philosophy has many parts, and I support those I can in good conscience.

I hope this helps. Very good thoughts from you, Tammy!

Blessings,

Linda

Hi I know there are a number of articles in the Monitor about the nfb
philosophy how does and should this work with our faith and how does or can
both faith and philosophy work together
