[Faith-Talk] getting new perspective--reading Catholic Bible as Protestant

Thanks for the ref, Bill--I plan on doing that as well; not only
does it enlighten us about other perspectives--it may even bolster our
faith! I think some Protestants feel so defended about their own faith that
they don't have the necessary humility to recognize that there may be
something of value in other writings, whether or not they made the
Protestant canon. I get so tired of anti-Catholic bias within many
Protestant circles--but then, a lot of Protestants are "wounded Catholics",
and it's easy to throw the baby out with the bath water if you're not
careful. As someone who grew up Congregational, I never had that
issue--first, through Xavier Society, I had exposure to some of the
Charismatic Catholic writings, which totally appealed to me; second, when I
was a member of our local community center of the blind, our
then-craft-instructor was Catholic, and the first time she met me, she was
very vocal in mentioning God and His role in her life; her courage spoke
volumes--I wanted to be like that! Even if there are aspects of Catholicism
that we may or may not disagree with, we have the Cross and the life of
Christ and the early believers in common, and, since Christ will return, I
can't help thinking we need to stop the infighting and get down to the
business of introducing people to Him and supporting their growing faith.
As Christ said, "What is that to you!", when one of the disciples said,
"Well, what about John!" Somewhere we lost the concept of the first being
last and the last first...

Good morning, list.

I have embarked on a project that will give me a fresh perspective, in fact
it already is doing so. I am reading the New American Bible, the standard
that is being used in the U. S. Catholic Church today. This is new for me
as a Protestant, not ever having doine this or ever being encouraged to.

I am enjoying learning of differences in the rendering that impart a
different concept on some issues. I am accessing this Bible version through
the BARD recordings. I down loaded the Old Testament section yesterday and
will do so with the New Testament later.

These include the Apocrypha, something that has been considered forbidden
territory in Protestantism. This is intriguing to me, being able to read
for myself these passages and not having to rely on hearsay about them.

I feel this is important, to have some different perspectives from what I
have been taught to believe, that I may converse more intelligently if the
opportunity arises. This issue of whether those who have different beliefs
than our own would be welcome in our organization seemed to come to the fore
as a sticking point for some at our in-person division meeting at the
national convention. This is one initiative on my part to attempt to smooth
that over some if I can.

I will say that the NAB is written in clear, modern language that is easier
to follow than traditional texts such as the KJV are. Topical headings are
given in the recorded text and the chapter delineations are retained. I am
unsure if the vers numbers would be in the print text; not having them in
the recording actually makes the text flow better, actually.

I hope all of you will feel blessed today, finding inspiration in whatever
path your faith journey is taking you on.

I have read much of this version and I agree with you. It is very important
that we know more about other faiths Dr. is in Scripture. How can you fight
for your way if you don?t know how others understand. Wars are fought over
religious texts and they?re understanding of them. We cannot have peace
unless we do what Bill is doing.
