Hello all,
Thanks to all those who shared resources for accessible Christian materials.
It is not enough access since I cannot find some books I'd like in
accessible format. But I am glad to know there are more resources than I
thought out there.
One service I know about is Christian Record Services which is a nonprofit
in Lincoln Nebraska.
I had some questions about Christian Record Services, CRS, as well as a few
other ministries for the blind and visually impaired community and thought
it best to start new subjects about them.
You can find more information about CRS on their site
https://christianrecord.org/info/.
Their mission and services are as follows: Each year, Christian Record
Services, Inc. (dba Christian Record Services for the Blind) impacts
thousands of lives through services provided to them without
cost. All who are legally blind* or have physical impairments that prevent
them from holding reading material or focusing on ink print are eligible for
the following free services:
list of 6 items
. Full-Vision Books
combine braille, print, and audio, enabling parents who are blind to read
to their children who are sighted and parents who are sighted to help their
children who are blind learn to read braille
. Gift Bibles
and
Study Guides
are available in braille, large print, solar player, and NLS (National
Library Service) compatible digital cartridge
. Naomi Chapman Turner Library for the Blind
offers more than 1,600 volumes in NLS digital cartridge and through
Lib.Guide
. National Camps for Blind Children (NCBC)
are operated in partnership with camp facilities throughout the United
States
. Subscription Magazines
are produced in braille, large print, and audio.
. Zoo Buds
are adorable plush animals that contain children's stories and music on
solar-powered audiobook players for ages 3 to 9.
This service is from the Seventh Day Adventist Church but it says online
that they serve people of all faiths.
Have you used their services and if so what were they?
I used their magazine for youth in braille years ago. I don't know how long
I got it, but it was discontinued at some point.
Some other questions.
Have you used any of their magazines? I was considering becoming a member
and subscribing to one but cannot decide which one I'd like more.
If you read them, what is your opinion? How long is the magazine? Do you get
to keep the magazines once mailed to you?
Some are in braille; others in audio format, and some come in both.
Christian Record is their longest running publication and according to the
description, it sounds nice and general containing articles about faith,
relationships and health. Another one is called Vantage Point. It has
interviews and stories from several subjects like health, nature, travel and
personal accomplishments.
They have a large phone faith ministry. This is held almost every day. They
have presentations that you can dial into led by volunteers which I would
guess also give you options to ask questions of the presenter about Bible
reading but also other
daily life topics such as diabetes support, self esteem, and music
appreciation.
Has anyone attended some of these?
They also have camps for kids.
CRS does a lot. I have not looked up what sort of books they have. I'm
assuming their library is a lending program. I'll call them for more info.
If anyone has used it, how did that go? Were the books in good quality?
After a lot of use, braille can get kind of smashed.
Thanks for any opinions.
Take care,
Ashley
