Hi All,

I have been following the threads arising from Tony and Tina's prayer requests concerning spiritual warfare. First, to Tina and Tony, I have been keeping you in prayer all week, and it seems from your more recent notes that things are improving. Praise God!

Several people have offered great insights on this topic; Doug's and Linda's have particularly stuck with me. As many of you know, I serve on a Prayer Line ministry where my role is to pray with callers about their prayer requests, whatever those requests may be. Recently we have seen an uptick in calls from people who ask for prayer about spiritual warfare, or who say that either they or people around them are "possessed by demons" or "being attacked by demons." These are their experiences and their requests, and I don't have the knowledge to question them, nor am I in a position to do so even if I did. But I've struggled with how to handle these calls, and honestly I still do. Several weeks ago I reached out to our director, who some of you may remember from a call we hosted about the Prayer Line, to get some guidance on what to do about these self-described "demon attacks." Her short answer was that we have no way of knowing for certain whether or not what a person is dealing with is entirely spiritual or a problem of this world; this is certainly true of another person's situations, and it is likely also true of our own. What we do know from the Bible is that Satan influences what happens in this world—that he comes to "steal, kill and destroy." We also know that we have the Holy Spirit living in us, the same power which gve Jesus the ultimate victory over the enemy. So, rather than trying to discern what something is, she encouraged me to remind the caller that the battle belongs to Jesus, and to pray accordingly. I still struggle with these requests from time to time, but I try to keep her message in mind, and I hope that same message will also help you.

Finally, several of us were looking for Scriptures that will help in such situations. Our shift coordinator texts a verse to each of us shortly before our Prayer Line shift. Here's the one she sent today, which I thought was appropriate here: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
