[Flagdu] Flagdu Digest, Vol 51, Issue 8

Yes
I’m fortunate enough to have a handle that is removable.
What would be great is if the schools offered this option, -- at the cost of
the handler. This way the school could put their name on it, along with the
reflective tape that is used.
Please let us know if you find a place that makes these nylon harnesses. I
also enjoy going to the beach.
Thank you so much!

Hi Janet and all,

It's just my opinion that the training programs would prefer that we use
their harnesses, since they have the logo or program name stamped on them.
But I'd say that those which grant full ownership respect dog handlers
enough to not be concerned about such things. Once you own your dog, it is
your decision the type of gear your dog will wear. Since budgets are tight
for all training programs these days, I doubt they will be offering a nylon
harness option any time soon. I do wish that their harnesses would be
modified so the handle could be removed. I know some programs offer this
feature, and I think it's at times very convenient, and much more
comfortable for the dog when riding long distances for example. Yes, you can
remove the harness, but being able to simply remove the handle is a great
option. I think most of the nylon harnesses have this feature. I'm looking
for one presently, so I'll keep you posted on whether I'm successful.
There's a company I called yesterday called Dean and Tyler, but the
harnesses aren't custom made. They simply come in two sizes, with no choice
for length of the handle.

Warm regards
Sherrill

Do we know how guide dog schools feel about these web sites?
Has anyone contacted there school about having a nylon harness made for
those of us that enjoy boating the beach etc, are they for or against
graduates having such a harness made?
If people that are fraudulently Representing them self’s as being disable
knew they could be hit with a large fine or worse, this may curve there
impulse to do so, and help improve those with a legitimate service dog.
I agree this is a great topic that could change things for us in either a
positive or negative light.
Worth looking into further. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

I agree with Sherrill's below.  I can not take my dog to the beach or any
other area where there's water/sand because of fear of damaging the harness.
I would prefer to not have to make the choice of leaving her at home.  I
also would dislike having to dig out my Service Dog ID every where I go. I
agree that there has to be some improvement to curbing fraudulent use of
pets as service dogs and so on, but let's not give up our own rights in the
process.

This has been some good discussion.  We all need to be involved in the legal
issues concerning our rights as Guide Dog users, but it has to be done the
right way.  In  order for that to happen WE have to be involved.  The folks
in Washington don't know our needs.  They're not service dog users.  The
schools mean well, but THEY are not service dog users.  It's up to us to
educate, advocate, and encourage them to make the right choices on our
behalf.  Stand by Marion and listen to what he has to say.  - Tracie

Dear All,

A  petition has been recently circulated from Canine
Companions for Independence (CCI) that seems to have the support of other
service animal training programs. This petition is asking the U.S.
Department of Justice to ban the online sale of service animal gear in an
effort to stem the proliferation of the use of what the writer is calling
"fake service animal gear". The National Association of Guide dog Users Inc.
(NAGDU), A STRONG AND PROUD DIVISION OF THE National Federation of the
Blind, has written an official response to this petition. We would like to
encourage those interested in this issue to read our response and make
comments on our online blog. You can read our comment by visiting our

Hello all,

I wanted to follow up on this important issue. As president of FLAGDU, I am
certainly in agreement with our NAGDU president. I would urge you to go to
NAGDU's Harness Up blog and read what Marion has to say in response to the
petition of Canine Companions for Independence, which would seek to ban the
sale of service animal gear. I admit that it is a natural reaction to at
first think banning service dog gear would help make this fraud go away. But
we need to be thoughtful and careful when proceeding so we don't diminish
our rights in the process. It is my opinion that legitimate service dog
handlers should not have to show identification everywhere we go. We could
certainly work on legeslation to  put in place criminal penalties for
falsely asserting that a dog is a service animal. Actually, when a person
commits this fraud, they are not only pretending that their dog is a service
animal, they are also pretending to have a disability. After all, the first
question an employee or staff member can ask: is   the dog a service animal
required because of a disability? So it is fraudulent that the person is
passing him or herself off as having a disability. This is most assuredly a
criminal offense, so it makes sense to work toward adding this into our
Florida access laws

On a personal note, I've been wanting to purchase a lightweight and washable
nylon harness for Fallon. It would be wonderful to use when we go to the
beach, as I wouldn't be worried about getting saltwater on it. I should have
the right to purchase such a harness, and not be penalized because some
choose to break the law.

So take a look at Marion's response if you haven't done so, and I'd love to
see a thoughtful discussion on this matter.

Warm regards
Sherrill

Hello Sherrill,

I couldn't agree with you more on this matter.
Do you currently have a committee working on Florida ADA legislation for
criminal penalties?
If so could you contact me, I would be very interested in working on this
committee.
