[Flagdu] Owner Trained Versus Guide Dog School Program in order to get a guide dog

Hello Helga,

A school trained guide dog is from one of the many schools in the US.  When you get your dog it is already trained as a guide dog.

An owner trained guide dog is just that, a guide trained by the owner/handler.

Owner training is not for everyone, but if you have a lot of experience training dogs then you might consider it.

I have trained my pet dogs since I was 10 years old so it was just natural for me to train my own guide dog.  I had a dog from a school that was a real challenge so I figured I could handle training a dog myself.

I have had my present dog Walker for three and a half years now and he is really doing well.

For a first guide I would suggest a school trained dog so you can become familiar with all the commands and be comfortable with working with a dog before training your own dog.

I have met more and more owner trainers so it is an option more and more people are serious about.
