[Flagdu] The loss of my beloved Lionel my first Seeing Eye dog

Greetings Carlos,

Sorry to hear about Lionel, but, as you indicated, it was not easy for you
but probably best for him. I expect that it is especially hard, since
Lionel was your first guide. I had a similar issue with my fifth and sixth
guides, one with a brain tumor and the other with lymphatic cancer. With
my fifth, his brain tumor caused paralysis of all muscles, including those
that expelled fluid in his lungs, so he was slowly suffocating. I had to
make the decision to have him put to sleep. Losing a beloved guide is one
area that all of us guide dog users must deal with, but there is no easy
answer.

Doug

Greetings to all of you. It is with a heavy hart that I write to all of you.
Yesterday afternoon at 410 pm I lost my retired Seeing Eye dog Lionel to
cancer. He was 13 years old and on the one hand I am glad that he is not
suffering any more but on the other hand it is extremely painful. He died
in my arms. The toomer that Lionel had was blocking his air way and thus he
was having difficulty breathing. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated
during this difficult time. I am so blessed to have my current guide Xena
with me as well as the support of so many of you who are guide dog users.
