[Greater-baltimore] FW: BCPL Highlights for September 2012: access to e-books

Rovig, Lorraine LRovig at nfb.org
Fri Aug 31 14:02:54 UTC 2012

Baltimore County Public Library is providing patrons with access to e-books, beginning September 5. I will guess that a blind reader cannot use the in-library "touch-based interface" but can a blind reader browse and check out titles from a personal computer or Apple product using iOS? Here are the last two sentences of the announcement in their newsletter below:

The 3M Discovery Terminals, located at Towson and Catonsville branches, have an intuitive touch-based interface allowing you to browse and check out titles from the digital collection, or you can browse the digital bookshelf from anywhere. You can even check out books at home or on the go using your e-Reader. E-Books are compatible with PCs, iPads, iPhones, Nooks, Androids and 3M e-Readers.

Highlights: September 2012
"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book!"

Jane Austin
Introduction

[3M Cloud Library: easy. ebooks. september 5.]
According to Jane Austin, there is no enjoyment like reading. Here at BCPL, we couldn't agree more. That's why we're so committed to not only making sure our physical collection of books is current, but also bringing you the most up-to-the-minute technology.

BCPL has long been on the cutting edge of modern libraries, and now we are proud to introduce our new 3M Cloud-based lending service for e-Books. Our Towson Branch will be hosting an event to unveil the service on Wednesday, September 5th at 10 a.m. This new system will provide you with exciting new ways to discover, borrow and read e-Books from your branch. This e-Book service includes a comprehensive subscription for both digital content and in-library hardware, along with apps for borrowing and reading.

Cockeysville Branch Librarian Karin Kinzel was one of the beta-testers. She used the service with her iPad. "It's so easy, intuitive and I can download a book with just one click." As part of the testing, she also helped a customer download the app and check out a book using the 3M Cloud. The customer's response was "This is amazing!"

The 3M Cloud Library e-Book lending provides e-Books and software. The system currently includes more than 2,500 titles from more than 40 leading publishers including Random House, Sourcebooks and IPG. Publishing partners continue to be added to the system regularly.

[http://contentcafe2.btol.com/ContentCafe/jacket.aspx?UserID=ebsco-test&Password=ebsco-test&Return=T&Type=S&Value=9781610390040]Frank Partnoy's Wait: The Art and Science of Delay is a fascinating look into the various ways decisions are made. According to the author, the crux of delay is not only in deciding what we should do or how it should be done, but as importantly, when. This provides the thesis of this groundbreaking look into the timing of our decisions.

Partnoy frames the studies by first looking at decisions that must be made in a split-second, and as the book goes on, he looks at decisions that take longer and longer to make--some that could be termed procrastinations. Starting with athletes who must perform in what he calls "superfast sports," the author breaks down the manner in which baseball and tennis players must react to a pitch or serve. These decisions are made in a matter of milliseconds. As fast as a tennis serve is hit, the returner's preconscious skills kick in, combining visual and muscle acuity. The player who is able to wait the longest and still effectively return the serve has the greatest chance of success.
The decision making of animals is also discussed. It was long thought that only humans could make future decisions. But recent studies have shown that many animals, including dogs, pigeons, monkeys and rats have all shown that considering the future is within their abilities. Retaining a small bit of food knowing that they can trade it in for more in the future, storing food where it will be found later and building tools not instantly needed are examples of how animals are aware of delay, and use it to their benefit. Wait is a thought-provoking yet accessible read, and is certain to be of interest to fans of Malcolm Gladwell's Blink and Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow.

[http://contentcafe2.btol.com/ContentCafe/jacket.aspx?UserID=ebsco-test&Password=ebsco-test&Return=T&Type=S&Value=9780062117434]Author Christopher Healy offers the refreshing The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, delving into the lives of four unsung heroes known collectively as Prince Charming. Inside we discover...

Frederic: When he met Ella once upon a dance floor, proper Prince Frederic (a.k.a. the Prince Charming of Cinderella) literally swept her off her feet. After his teensy-toed love had been located, they became engaged. But then Frederic discovers a note from Ella, gently informing him of the end of their engagement and her intent to pursue adventure. Ella's flight and Frederic's determination to follow ultimately lead this Prince Charming (and the other three of that moniker) to find one another.

Gustav: Gustav has always been overshadowed by his older brothers and wrestles with the need to prove himself a hero. It doesn't help that his love, Rapunzel, ended up rescuing him with her daring, persistence and magically healing tears. Now a laughingstock in his own kingdom, by the time he meets Frederic, Gustav is disgruntled and more determined than ever to prove himself.

Liam: Of all the heroes worth singing about, the bards really dropped the ball when they failed to name Liam, star of Sleeping Beauty. Since childhood, Liam has performed feats of the greatest daring and has enjoyed an excellent reputation among his people. Yet when his intended, Briar Rose, reveals her waspish, mean personality and Liam decides to call off the wedding, his subjects are anything but supportive. Rejected and determined to restore his reputation as a Good Guy, Liam is off questing for adventure when he encounters Frederic and Gustav.

Duncan: Duncan is a bit of an odd duck who since the time of his princely boyhood has been convinced that he is gifted with magical luck (he isn't). He also has some rather off-putting habits like loudly naming any animal he sees. Happily, his bride Snow White loves him dearly. Yet sometimes even Snow needs a break from Duncan, and it is when he is left on his own in the forest that he meets the trio of princes. From there, the real adventure begins.
The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom is a story of many parts: know-it-all dwarves, dastardly thieves, kidnappings and well-mannered giants. At its heart though, it's a story of the friendship between the four flawed, fastidious, courageous and just plain weird individuals behind the mask of Prince Charming. Written to appeal to middle-grade readers, the humorous novel will also tickle the fancy of older readers. And with the movie rights under contract and two more books expected in the series, the adventure will soon continue.
