Dear fellow Federationists:

Below is an email from my NFB Jernigan Institute colleague Matt Hackert inviting blind staff to participate in a technology demonstration on Monday, July 26, which is this coming Monday. Interested chapter members are also welcome. Please feel free to let Matt know if you would like to participate. If you're not sure how to find or enter Riverside Park, we can arrange for someone to meet you at the Johnson street entrance of the NFB headquarters to help; just let Matt know of this need.

Warmly,

Chris

Subject: Visit from Capitol Region Nordic Alliance July 26

Dear colleagues,
I wanted to invite you to check out a demonstration by the Capitol Region Nordic Alliance (CRNA), Russ Myer, Karen Fagan, and Megan Hale will be at the Riverside Park on Monday, July 26 and have a mock rail orienteering course setup with their app which is based on Microsoft's Soundscape app.

Trail orienteering is a sport which normally involves using a compass and a map to find various "checkpoints" on a trail. CRNA has adapted this sport for the blind, using a modified version of Microsoft Soundscape. The app begins by providing distance and baring to the first checkpoint. As you make progress toward the checkpoint, the app will provide updated distances as you close in on the checkpoint. Once you have made it within roughly ten feet, the app will give you the next checkpoint baring and distance. Depending on difficulty level, there are typically 5-10 checkpoints in a course.

Russ and crew will be at the park all day, showing people how their app works, and helping them run through their mock course. If you have 20 minutes or so, they'd love to show you what they've done. Please check with your supervisor to determine if you can participate, and let me know so that I can schedule a time for you to head to the park.

Kind regards,
Matt
