Hello all:
Perhaps you looked at the subject line and thought: Wait. What? It can't be
time for the meeting of the Greater Baltimore Chapter already! But yes, it
is, pursuant to our vote at the last meeting, which was to move our October
meeting to this coming Saturday, October 12, to accommodate the Baltimore
Running Festival (and our participation in it) on October 19. So, do please
join us this coming Saturday. You won't want to miss all of our usual
chapter business, plus a visit from Liz Woodward, Assistant Secretary,
Planning, Maryland Department of Aging, who will tell us about the state's
Longevity Ready Maryland plan and how we can help to inform it. A
description of this initiative is at the end of this message, below my
signature.
Our meeting will be held at the NFB Jernigan Institute, the headquarters of
the National Federation of the Blind located at 200 East Wells Street,
Baltimore MD 21230. The meeting will take place in the NFB of Utah
Auditorium, just beyond the doors leading into the main building from the
fourth-floor atrium, and will begin promptly at 10 a.m. The doors to the
Jernigan Institute on Wells Street will open at 9 a.m. Please do not attend
the meeting if you have a fever or are feeling ill. Also, please observe our
no-fragrance policy so that our meeting will be welcoming to chapter members
and guests who are sensitive or allergic to fragrances. Remember please that
such fragrance allergies or sensitivities can result in anything from minor
annoyance to a trip to the hospital, so please do not splash on any smelly
stuff.

Longevity Ready Maryland is the Maryland Department of Aging's 10-year
multi-sector plan on aging that will prepare Maryland to address the
challenges and maximize the opportunities of a growing population of older
adults. This initiative recognizes that older adults offer tremendous value
to our state, fueling local economies, providing support for families, and
contributing to the community in many ways. By 2030, it is expected that
more than one in four Marylanders will be over the age of 60. By ensuring
equal access to coordinated care, services, and healthy living situations,
we can become a state where all Marylanders lead healthy, financially
secure, socially connected, and purposeful lives.
The Longevity Ready Maryland plan will address the role of agencies across
the government to evaluate existing care options for older adults and
recommend actions to prepare the state for the population change we are
experiencing. The plan will serve as a roadmap for Maryland to positively
transform the aging experience for all Marylanders through partnership,
investment of resources, and policy changes. The plan is in development now
and will be active July 2025.
