> Creating and Managing Folders in
> the Mail App
> This document introduces you to the concept of working with folders in the Mail app on an Apple iPhone, in conjunction with VoiceOver and iOS 14.8.
> Why Use Folders?
> As time goes by, you will accumulate a lot of email messages in your Inbox. This isn't a serious problem; it could make finding a particular message
> time consuming, as you will probably have to swipe through a long list in order to find it.
> Think of your Inbox as your doormat underneath your letter box. As mail arrives, you pick it up, check to see if it is important and do one of three things:
>
> a) Throw it in the paper recycling box.
> b) File it away for safe keeping.
> c) Put it to one side and deal with its contents later in the week.
> Ideally, any email messages that you no longer need should be deleted. Those which you want to refer to at a later date should be filed away in a folder,
> and those which you intend to work with later should be left in the Inbox. This way, you will find managing your email messages much easier!
>
> Creating a New Folder
> The Mail app allows you to create new folders. Apple refers to folders as Mailboxes. This can be a little confusing, as the word 'Mailbox' can also be
> used to refer to an email account. In this document, a Mailbox and Folder are the same thing. They are storage areas for mail messages.
> To create a new folder, in conjunction with VoiceOver, follow these suggested steps:
>
> 1. In the Mail app, ensure that your view is on the mailbox page. To do this, one finger double tap the "Mailbox Back" button, located at the top left corner of the screen, until VoiceOver announces "Mailboxes".
>
> 2. Swipe from left to right with one finger to find the "Edit" button, located at the top right corner of the Mailboxes page. This will allow you to be in 'edit mode', where you will be able to perform various editing actions.
>
> 3. Locate and one finger double tap on the "New Mailbox" button. For reference, this button is located at the bottom right corner of the screen. If you have swiped from the top of the screen down the page from left to right, you may hear “add new mailbox” button; this is NOT the button you’re looking for.
>
> 4. In the New Mailbox screen, focus will automatically be placed in the Text Field. VoiceOver will announce "text field, is editing, name, character mode, insertion point at start". This means you are ready to name the folder you’re creating. You can use two fingers and double tap to begin dictation or use the on-screen keyboard to name the folder.
>
> 5. You should find that the name you dictated or typed is now in the text field. Once your done naming the folder your creating, begin from the top left-hand corner with the “Cancel” button landmark and swipe from left to right with one finger past the text field until you hear Mailbox location. If you swipe one more time past the Mailbox location title, there will be an unlabeled button that you’re looking for.
>
> 6. Voice Over only labels this button as “button”, once you have found this button one finger double tap. This will allow you to decide where you want your folder, and for which account you want to be located within. If you have more then one email account set up on your device.
>
> 7. Once you have one finger double tapped on the button, your focus is now on a page with a list of all existing folders. This list will start with the name of your email account. Beneath this, you will find all of the folders associated with the account. If you only have one email account, only account title will be at the top.
>
> 8. You now need to decide where in the list you want the folder to go. A new folder will be created directly beneath the folder you double tap on. By swiping from left to right you will be moving down the list; by swiping from right to left you will be moving up in the list. Usually, the folders are listed in alphabetical in order.
>
> 9. Once you have decided where you want your new folder to be located and you have double tapped on the folder above where it should go, you will be returned to the page where you named the new folder. Now locate and double tap on the "Save" button, located at the upper right corner of the page; your focus will be returned to the mailbox page in “edit” mode and your new folder has been created.
>
> 10. Finally, locate and double tap on the "Done" button, located at the upper right corner of the screen. You will be returned to the Mailbox view. If your unsure if you followed the instructions and would like to make sure that your folder was created, swipe from left to right until you hear the new folder.
>
> Be careful here, the mailbox page can be very confusing with two of the same sounding accounts or folders. The first is a shortcut to the Inbox folder for the email account. The second item is the one you want. When you one finger double tap on this, VoiceOver will announce "button" after the name. Then, VoiceOver will announce the number of unread messages in that account, followed by either "Collapsed" or "Expanded".
> If VoiceOver says "Collapsed", perform a One Finger Double Tap to expand all of the folders; VoiceOver will announce "expanded" and all folders
> associated with the email account will be displayed.
>
> Also be careful when in “edit” mode on the mailbox page. As you swipe from left to right or right to left, you will first hear voice over say the account or folder name and then the “re-order account or folder name” button. If you use the double tap and hold gesture, you have the ability to move the accounts and folders to a different location in the list. If you double tap on one of the accounts and or folder names, this might unselect or select the account or folder; this will mean that once your out of the “edit” mode you may see folders and or accounts that you have never heard previously. By one finger double tapping on that folder again in the “edit” mode you will select or unselect that account or folder again.
