hi list,
I've been using AVG Free Edition Version 8 for a long time without a
problem. But when I launched it today, intending to run a scan, I got this
message that I'd never seen before.
When you launch the program,it comes up at first with what it calls its
component list as a sort of pane covering part of the interface (I can see
this), and after you switch to the Jaws cursor to read down the list of
things in that pane, like the report of when the program last updated
itself, when the last scan was run, and so forth, you can actually use the
program by getting out of the Jaws cursor and alt tabbing to come around to
the interface again, but now with all the controls and menus accessible.
That's all normal.
but today, when I turned on the Jaws cursor and read through the items in
that component list, I found this message "control file missing." Now, I
have no idea what that means. But I can say that this pane nonetheless
reports that the program updated early this morning, and everything else
looks as it usually does.
Now, I suppose I could just ignore this, run a scan and see what happens.
But I'd prefer to know what this message means. If it implies some essential
file is corrupted, there's no way to run a repair. I'd have to uninstall and
download a fresh copy from the AVG site, which I could do if I had to.
But before I go any farther, I'd love to know what's up with this error
message? Anyone know? And honest, this is all I'm asking. I am not implying
that I'm ready to give up on AVG and need to hear about the wonders of Nod
32 or something. No offense intended to anyone, but I'm asking this question
here rather than on certain other lists where I can be certain I'd get the
Gospel of Nod 32 from a particular list subscriber who loves to run this
riff. bre e because I hope I won't get that. I mean, I really would like to
know what this is about, not just give up on AVG. Thanks for understanding.
