[gui-talk] blank messages from this list

You would think if that were the case in a particular instance, the message
within the email message area itself would say that, in so many words.but
I've never seen such a thing. I never have failed to receive a file
attachment because anything deleted it along the way. Just never happened to
me.

Some antivirus programs will delete the attachment and notify you that one
came your way. This used to be an option in Symantec's products. I
remember seeing the option to automatically delete infected attachments with
AVG my new antivirus program but I didn't choose that method of control.

Well, that just sounds prudent, even if you're wrong now and then.
Personally, so far as I've ever been aware, the only instance where I
receive the occasional email with an attachment of that sort has been with
returned emails I've just sent and which the receiving server has rejected
for one reason or another, clearly stated in the body of what I typed, just
where an ordinary message would have appeared. In the case of such notices
that used that file attachment thing, it was always clear to me that the
attachment simply contained my undelivered message, and beside it was shown
some other thing, which I had the impression was a coded version of it. or
at least that is how the attachments were labeled and that's what the
message to me read, so I generally didn't bother opening them. Because,
let's say I wanted to send that message again but try another email address,

the message was already right here in my Sent Items folder to be gotten out
again by forwarding or copying and pasting, so why bother opening that att
attachment anyway.

that said, maybe it's possible that I've missed something now and then if
blank emails (or post replies lacking any new message at the top of the
message area happened to bear attachments that for some reason OE didn't
announce to me and I've missed something. But I kinda doubt it. OE doesn't
usually fail to inform me of the presence of an attachment. Because of this
history, I confess I didn't even check yesterday when a post without a new
message appeared here. I just deleted it, figuring it was just a mistake and

another message would soon be posted with the lister saying Whoops. Here's
the message. Meantime, the blank email hadn't said "attachment," so far as I

recall.

Just thinking aloud. Hazard of not having had much coffee yet. By the way,
if the type of attachment you have consistently declined to open has always
been what you're referring to as text file, I mean if it's literally a
plain text file, then it ought not to have contained a virus. A message in
HTML coding could carry and release a virus, but not a plain texxt file.

I have had Norton and also McAfee replace an attachment with a text file
warning that the attached file has a virus. I guess I chose not to read the
text file to see what it said -- It isn't unlikely that a virus could be
sent to the list and the recipients (me for example) would receive a mail
with attachment that didn't pass the test of my antivirus software.
In short, I have been just deleting blank messages from this list as I
assume -- probably incorrectly -- that they contain a virus.
In so doing I may be deleting legitimate messages.
Just a precaution.
Happy reading.

What kind of antivirus would send out phony emails? Also, I've seen plenty
of blank posts on lists that nearly always turn out to be mistakes by real
subscribers to that list.

I looked at the attachments and they contained a picture and an att.txt or
something like that. I didn't find the text of the message, but maybe I
didn't look far enough. I just delete the blank mail as I figured the
attachments meant an antivirus program put them there.
Thanks.

There are sometimes incompatibilities between mail program settings and
what the list software expects. It has to do with the vagaries of the
way multipart/mixed messages are interpreted. Usually, if there's more
than one attachment, one of them is the text.

I've never quite gotten to the bottom of why this happens to some people
on some lists but some have been able to correct the problem and perhaps
David Andrews has a bit of a clue now.

Hi all --
Has anyone else been getting blank messages from this list? If someone
is
posting messages and isn't aware they are coming across blank, please
check
what is coming back when you post. I looked at the message carefully
and
there was an attachment on it, which I thought might contain something,
but
it only had something that looked computer or list generated.
Just wondering if there is a list problem.
Cheers and happy thanksgiving.
