I think you'll be talking around $600 or so. I track laptops more than I
might because my wife uses one.

I have other considerations in mind beyond what's been discussed here,
especially concerning whether or not to get a Mac and take comfort at first
from being able to run Windows on it if I feel the need to.

First of all, one of my closest friends, the guy who solves any problem I
have with my PC or its apps, is a Windows guy, as is the industry he works
in. Business- systems and programming. I suppose he could figure out how to
help me with a Mac, if necessary, but still I'm feeling prudent about this.

Second, whatever I get has to adequately replace my desktop. The whole point

is to be able to unchain myself from the desk if I wish to. And God forbid
(just an expression, my secular humanist pals) I should be in the hospital
again for days just staring at the ceiling (which is hard to do if you can't

see that far!), listening to NPR on my Sandisk Sansa, and wishing I could
have the nurse crank up the back of the bed, get me my laptop and ear buds
for Jaws, and get in a few hours on the Web, in email, and working on my
writing.

But I would want this laptop to be as substantial and durable as possible,
with a manageable keyboard, good battery life and a Y Fi card, not sort of
tinny like an accessory.

that's all I can think of right now. But as this may be something I can
cadge as a holiday gift, I do care what the relative price ranges are for
what I'm talking about, too, whether it's a PC or a Mac.

Just throwing this stuff out there. My brain's running a little slow due to
the sedatives I have to take for medical reasons, but my I.Q. is still up
there. So please be patient with me if I'm not asking my questions well.

And I will make the attempt Lloyd recommends of going online and seeing what

articles and reviews I can find in order to educate myself a little more
about laptops in general. Soon. Promise.
