Geetha,,

1. No,I wasn't having any problems with IE6, but that was a long time ago
now and the truth is that, despite my resentment of having had to invest
some time to learn its ways, I don't have any problems with IE7, either. I
wouldn't discourage anyone from installing it,, and I don't know why you say
6 is the best, especially because you offer no comparison, particularly IE
7. Personally, I love the tab browsing capability. But that's neither here
nor there.

2. as for the card business, I see. Someone explained this to me off list,
also. It's a Braille term for actual physical cards that are much like print
note cards, and that makes sense. I'm not a Braille reader, and so something
like that wouldn't be of any use to me, anyhow. But what they're offering is
not "online," as you put it, but a physical DE-ROm bearing a text file. I
guess so they can have a physical object to sell, rather than charge access
to a file? Or so you can keep the CD on a shelf or something?

In any case, the terminology seems to have thoughtlessly carried over,
confusing me in the process.

thanks for everything,
Joel

Joel,

Despite switching to a new laptop recently, I still use Internet Explorer 6
and will resist upgrading unless Microsoft makes IE6 dysfunctional. Did you
have any specific problems with IE6 because of which you had to upgrade? I
think IE6 is still the best version available.

As for NBP's reference cards: I once purchased a 'reference card'
containing computer braille code. Along with a small booklet, they sent a
couple of card-sized sheets containing only the commands. The booklet
contained all the explanation. I presume the terminology does not apply to
online formats, unless they distribute two files, one containing the
detailed explanation and another file containing just the commands and their
functions.

Tony or Dave,

this reference thing sounds as if it could be helpful, and I even went to
the provided link to see if there was a little more descriptive information
online. Now, I'm thinking I'll eventually have to give in and install IE 8
just as I reluctantly gave in about IE 7, then had to spend some good time
reading explanations and instructions on the Microsoft site, somewhere or
other, and then got comfortable with it. As I said, I guess I'll have to
give in and go forward. Although I hope I won't have to study quite so much
as I had to in order to get familiar with IE7.

Now, here's what I don't get. Just a terminology thing. Online, at the
company site (should I properly call it the publisher's site?), I see it's
offered in only one format, which is a text file on CD-Rom. Now, that's okay
with me. But what I gotta ask is, why is it called a reference card? In my
better-sighted days, that would mean a real card made of card stock on which
you'd have typed or written notes to rmeind you of points you wanted to
make, etc. while you were giving a speech, or maybe details about how to do
some kind of task, but without carrying around an entire instruction book.

In the digital world, has that become a new slang for something like this,
even though it isn't really a card, and you can't use it quite the same way
as what I just described? Seriously, glancing at a card while hesitating on
the next word of a speech and then continuing is nothing like having to
switch back and forth with Alt Tab between something you're doing in an
application and looking up something on a CD-Rom. I don't mean to rain on
anybody's parade. Somebody just tell me, is this slang now in the digital
world for something like this thing?

thanks,
Joel
