I do not know the exact definition of a netbook, if indeed there is one,
but I have researched them, and their basic characteristics are as
follows.

They are designed to be small, light, and to have longer battery life
than a typical notebook.

Screen size ranges from 7 to 10 inches.

Some contain traditional hard drives, but many use flash memory for
storage. This ranges from 8 to 16 GB, but makes the unit lighter, and
increases battery life.

Most use either a Via or intel Atom processor, even though Acer has a
model that uses a Celeron. The via or intel Atom processor is designed
to use far less power than traditional processors.

These machines do not have a built in CD or DVD burner, but they have 3
or 4 USB ports, so you can use an external burner that will run you
about $70.

These machines typically have built in wireless internet, and web cam.
Some have built in bluetooth. They have 3 or 4 USB ports and a card
reader. They also have built in capacity for Ethernet and dial up
connectivity. Battery life runs from 4 to 8 hours, depending on whether
you use a 3 or 6 cell battery. The latter greatly improves charge life,
but adds about a half pound to the weight of the machine. The OS is
either linux or Windows XP. In fact, they are about the only new PC's
that I have seen that still offer XP. Bundled software usually includes
MS Works, and not Office, even though you can run Office on them. They
generally have 1 GB RAM, but HP has models that offer 2 GB and they are
the only one that offers Vista Business as an OS. They run in price from
$300 to $500. I have a friend who has an Asus Eee PC netbook, and he
loves it. He has loaded JAWS, Window Eyes, MS Office 2003, K1000, Open
Book, and the software for the Eyepal, in addition to several games. He
says that everything runs fine, but sometimes programs are slow to open.
He has had no difficulty with either screen reader. Because the
machine is so light and small, he packs it in a typical briefcase along
with the other things that he takes to work each day. He says it also
works well with portable scanners, like the ones made by Cannon.

Hope this helps.

Andy

hi,
I saw an hp netbook this afternoon. it looked the same size as the sony.
But I confess I did not have my sony to put it side-by-side.
