[gui-talk] IE Defaults (was Re: SHIFT TAB in Internet Explorer7)

Kelly,

I understand, and thanks. But how on earth am I supposed to guess that IE
can't get to slate.com because there's some diabolical add-on I don't even
know about? Believe me, I'm the kind of in-the-dark guy who doesn't even
understand why every time I open certain kinds of email bulletins I get
(from trusted sources, believe me), they keep saying that I won't be able to
view the email as it was designed to be seen because my system is set to not
allow Active-X? See? I've never to my knowledge deliberately installed or
consented to the installation of any add-ons, not that I recall. I'm just
befuddled by this whole problem and don't even understand what I'm supposed
to be able to accomplish by fiddling with my Options settings. To me, it has
the feeling of something having gone wrong with the program, as in the
scenario where people like to say to do a Jaws repair and see if that helps.
if this sounds confused, it's because I am. confused.

I mean, is it really that I should go to the Microsoft download area and
install IE 7 as if I didn't already have it, and that will overwrite my
possibly corrupted copy? or?

If I weren't too distracted to take the time and effort it requires of me to
do something apparantly simple like install Firefox, learn how to use it,
and install whatever it is that you have to install in order for it to work
well with Jaws, I'd do it in a heartbeat. In all my years of using Windows
and IE, I simply never had problems like what's happened the past six months
or so. Like not being able to get to slate.com, or suddenly having to type
the www in front of latimes.com, and stuff like that. It's just too wierd
and inexplicable.

When you use the reset, there will be another dialog asking if you want to
do this. It will then let you go forward when you press the reset button in
that second dialog.

Quite honestly if you are trying to resolve a problem with a troublesome
add-on, the no add-ons mode or selectively disabling add-ons is a better
option then the reset button.

ah. Okay. I wouldn't have guessed that. Thanks. do I then have to press OK?
Or does hitting the Reset button change every setting in the Advanced tab
back to default status and close the Options menu?

You want the Reset button.

Raul,

What is the button or control actually called that you're talking about? In
the Advanced Settings tab, there is nothing with the word Default in it, and

the controls that look like they might be what you're referring to are
labeled either Restore Advanced Settings or Reset. Is it one of these that
will undo any settings I've made intentionally, such as checking or
unchecking certain items within this long set of items, or undo something
else that an alien force has done to damage my copy of IE?

Thanks.

Raul,

Thanks, and you are right, I remembered it was not the screen reader.
Kelly, I also appreciate your comments on
managing add-ons and the like. I'll give the defaults a try.
