I'm tolerant of the trials and errors of experimentation until I arrive at a

I think you will hit that optimum tightness with a bit of experimentation.
I find the two fingers suggestion was a bit much looseness when one
considers my particular fingers, but others experiences may well vary
considerably I guess.  I do not have the fit tight, but definitely not too
loose either!  Good luck!
