Hi,

sound like the disk has failed to me.  If it were me, I'd go burn my self a linux livecd to  boot the machine from and run smartmantools on the drive.  Smartmantools is a utility to check a disks status, my gues is that the drive has failed.  If this is the case, you should get another disk to copy data onto, and proceed to try to copy the data to that drive, you may find dd or dd_rescue to be useful here.
