[gui-talk] Need help updating Winamp

Wayne,

I once got the same advice, and did exactly that. But apparently it didn't
work. And now if Winamp launches because I've designated it as my default
media pplayer, the update notice comes between me and the Winamp interface,
and I can't use the normal keyboard controls on Winamp, stop it or turn it
off. I suppose I ought to just go find it on the programs menu of my Windows
XP, launch it from there, and maybe I'd be able to get into properties and
uncheck that check for updates thing if it's mysteriously rechecked itself.

As for your expeerience with WMP, I don't use it because I can't control it
just as you say. I like being able to start, stop, pause, and get two or
three kinds of information on a track using Winamp and the right keyboard
commands. So I'd rather stick with Winamp. I just hate getting fouled up by
this damn update notice.

As for Winamp having recently become less usable for you, etc., I have no
issues with that, no dog in the fight, because I don't care about libraries,
playlists or any of that. Just can't deal with learning that stuff. So I
just want my nice old Winamp back, without being messed up by the update
notice.

I'll try launching Winamp from the programs menu. I don't have a Desktop
icon for it, or else of course I'd just use that. Blah blah. You know.

There is a checkbox in the preferences dialog of Winamp, reached with
Control P, in the general preferences, where you can uncheck the
default state of being checked, which will tell Winamp to not check
for updates each time it starts. This will stop the annoying behavior
of it trying to get updates or telling you about newer versions. I
used Winamp for the longest time and have loved it. In the last few
years the Winamp library has simply become unusable. I consider myself
to be an intermediate JAWS user and am definitely a proponent of using
the JAWS cursor when needed. However, I finally got tired of doing
this all the time and uninstalled Winamp. I still support the program
and will recommend it to others, but I don't use it anymore. For my
media listening, which mainly consists of streams and podcasts from
the web, these days I use Windows Media Player, which already comes by
default on a Windows PC anyway. The big drawback of WMP is it's
interface and the lack of JAWS support. Even though FS promised big
support for WMP 11, I've yet to find any help file or keystroke
references in any of the usual JAWS help locations, including the JAWS
help system itself. Other than the standard keyboard controls such as
ControlP for play/pause and ControlS for stop, I'd love to hear about
any links of JAWS support in WMP 11 or higher if anyone knows. I'm
using JAWS 11. From what I hear, even sighted people aren't thrilled
with the interface, but WMP does come up quickly on an Internet stream
or file, like within 5-10 seconds. Other than this, since I have a
Booksense, and before that a VR Stream, I've been doing more and more
listening of audio files, podcasts, music, and other media on these
portable devices, mainly because I'm in more control and i can speed
up the normal playback if I want, which most of the time I do.

Hth,
Wayne
