[gui-talk] a warning

I ordered my upgrade directly from KESI (www.kurzweiledu.com), and I paid
$148.50--I just checked to make sure that was the right price. I don't
remember the exact breakdown that was given to me--this was in November of
last year--but it was the same $125 for the upgrade and the rest between
shipping and taxes, so it's certainly not just HumanWare, and it doesn't
seem to have to do with inter-country shipments, as KESI is in
Massachusetts, and my upgrade was being shipped to New York. I also highly
doubt that it costs so much to ship some CD's and documentation, so I would
suspect that, similar to what RFB&D does (I actually read that they do this,
the sentence is "Contrary to what some may believe, the [DAISY CD] players
[which RFB&D directly sells] are marked up from the original purchase price,
and the sales do help fund some of the agency's budget.", from an article
found at http://www.blindskills.com/sep_oct_2008_sample1.html), they are
charging higher shipping fees to help cover their costs--some is the actual
shipping fee, the rest goes back to the company. Based on your and my
experiences, I figure you'll probably end up paying a similar price no
matter who you order from, but ordering directly from KESI will, at least,
save you $6.

HTH,
Maria

Subject: [gui-talk] a warning

I just called humanware to order the upgrade of K1000 at the upgrade offer
price of $125. They took my order and quoted me a total of $154.xx which
seemed rather exorbitant. I asked for a breakdown and they said it included
the upgrade cost of $125 plus tax plus a whopping $20 shipping fee. Now
really, for a program cd and a bunch of docs they charge $20. I am quite
annoyed at this price.
Has anyone else encountered ridiculous shipping costs for material from
humanware?
Should I contest the price and order it elsewhere where they won't charge
this price? I think I will shop around.
Thanks.
