I believe most software vendors don't provide automatic updates for major
releases. The only updates you should get should be updates on the latest
major release you have already installed on your computer.

I have Adobe Reader 9.4 installed on my computer, but when I launch the
Check for Updates dialog, I get a no updates available message. I checked
the Adobe site, and they still list version 9.4 as the latest version of
Adobe Reader. Yet Major Geeks lists version 10.0 as the latest version.
How can a third-party site offer a later version of Adobe Reader than Adobe
itself? What's going on?
