Ken:

I've been following your queries over the last few days with interest. They have provoked the following query from me:

Why the heck do you expect any of us to be able to answer them? Why not ask the developers of the various screen-readers?

I *will* answer one of your queries below, however. The reason the various screen-readers act differently is that each of them is intercepting and trying to interpret for presentation the HTML, XML, CGI, PHP, javascript, etc. in a fashion that we users can understand. Of necessity, this means that the screen-readers must figure out what are actionable elements -- links, buttons, etc. -- and what one screen-reader can figure out, another one cannot.

Of course, what you're *really* seeing is how few websites actually conform to W3C guidelines for accessibility, such as they are.

Cheers!

Mike Freeman

Hi folks ran this by the NVDA list but not getting much help and it is getting worse. On the music site called blip.fm, I can’t seem to get NVDA even in an elements list view to correctly click links. this seems to have started a couple days ago. When listening in favorite DJs mode if I click links like for example next to skip a song I see merchants circle dot com, more about website load testing or sometime a link related to the site like feedback or support is hit and my live mail client comes up. I know how to opt out of something but even if I brows and arrow to the first letter of the link in question, It won’t click the right link and it is infact clicking several links above where it is sup-posed to. I Have to use NVDA and then only firefox on this site because on Jaws and IE the website’s results of songs I want to blip appear as text only. the site reads fine but the links for song titles, to preview, flag or to blip only show as text. On Firefox with Jaws it’s even funkier. something starts then stopps firefox for some reason. it starts loading then stops. Firefox shows the title of the site but that’s it and it can’t even shut down the browser. the reason I think it’s some kind of bug in NVDA is the focus problem seems to only have started Friday and it’ is getting worse. I think something is being exploited in NVDA. As for system access to go, forget it. it is a baffling one. How does a screen reader that you pay for not see something but the free one does. also how does something not show as links on one screen reader and then show up right on another. and finally if a site can clearly read right why isn’t it clicking right even in a links list view or as NVDA calls it elements list which I have set for links. Sure don’t want to install a new NVDA just for that, if you install a new upgrade something comes out you will be chasing your tail Huh? also one of replies I got said something about an Adblocker. not sure what one has to do with the other Huh? Other wise blip is great. my playlist played end to end is getting close to the 10 hour mark. you folks ought to try it. A blip is a song plus a message of 150 characters or less. you earn credits when a song of yours is reblipped and you spend the credits givingother DJs props for a song. I’m close to 300 listeners already and have 159 credits. www.blip.fm and my screen name is whozitrocker. so just put a slash and that screen name to listen to my playlist and to add me to your DJs.
