Sorry missed thread but if this is Word you can use alt-f-i-e to unprotect a document.

The f6 didn't work, but I did figure out that if you hit control s to save the document then a pop up appears where you can enable editing. By checking the box, and then saving the document, the document will be saved, with editing enabled.
