Susan,

If you find that Control-A and Control-c work to copy the PDF text to Notepad, it is likely that will work to copy and paste directly into your document.  Using Notepad as an intermediate holding area can be useful, though, in avoiding copying formatting that you may not need.  It can also be useful if you want to copy parts of a PDF because you can assemble them in Notepad and then copy the entire collection into a document.  Still, I suspect it was the ALT key that may have caused your original frustration.

First open Notepad.  Then highlight the PDF file and press Control-A to select all the text.  Then press Control-C to copy it to the clipboard. highlight Notepad, and press Control-V to paste it in.
