Call to Order at 9:03 am Acting Secretary is Gloria Tuuao Roll Call Gloria Tuuao Shannon Cantan Justin Salisbury NFB Pledge Secretary's Report No discussion. Shannon moves to accept the secretary's report and minutes as distributed. Gloria seconds. Approved. Treasurer's Report We are making pennies at a time, up to $677.70. No actions. Still need to add registration moneys, subtract WS subsidy, and create bank account. Gloria moves to approve the treasurer's report. Shannon seconds. Approved. HIABS email listserv During the meeting, Justin initiated Gloria's registration for both the student division and NFBH listservs. Shannon is already a member of the HIABS listserv and will manually sign up for the NFBH listserv. State Board, NFBH, is expecting HIABS on monthly calls but not inviting us. Watch for the Blind Signs NFBH State Board is considering language submitted by Justin that we will offer to the Honolulu City Council. This language will be submitted to the city council by the end of the weekend. Ho`opono could become the initiator of the resolution if they want to, but NFBH has already issued a policy decision to take up the initiative regardless. AIM HIGH Support University Letters On April 15, 2017, Shannon Cantan announced that he had secured a letter from the University of Hawaii System in support of AIM HIGH. What is the current status of that letter? He had been communicating with Office of the Chancellor of the Manoa campus and the Office of the President of the UH System. They seemed very positive but then shut down the discussion. Shannon tried to schedule a meeting with UH leadership but was denied. Shannon will send out his archived information on who he was contacting. Shannon recommended working with Matt LoPresti and Randy Gonce to try to get a letter from HPU. Shannon messaged Matt LoPresti during the call. Also, Shannon is reaching out to a woman at HPU who recently interviewed him for her master's thesis about the employment and upward mobility of blind people. Statewide Legislation Right to Parent is dead; however, Senator Josh Green has drafted a resolution that will allow the Senate to commit itself to establishing a right to parent for blind persons in future sessions. Subminimum wage bills are still alive, but they need amendments. They have 2050 effective dates, plus a preliminary $100,000 study on the Chang bill, which, as Shannon pointed out, will likely cost more than subsidizing the rest of the employee wages. The Takumi bill still allows payment of subminimum wages to workers with intellectual disabilities. An accessible voting amendment is still needed in mail-in voting legislation, HB 2541. Update on Interview Day: We have not heard back from Katie and Virgil's Rotary Club about partnering on this project, so we will have to follow up with them. What is the Hawaiian word when voting that means "skip me and come back to me after everyone else votes?" Justin will reach out to Natalia Hussey-Burdick, who used the voting term recently. Regional Student Seminar - Reach out to Matt Gip to see what California wants to do. It might help increase participation if we move it to a mainland state, such as California, Nevada, or Arizona. Justin will reach out. The New Visions Program does not yet know which convention they will be attending. Motion to adjourn by Shannon Seconded by Gloria Adjourned 9:58 AM
