[Home-on-the-range] SRS expands access to services for Kansans who are blind or visually impaired

I'm not sure I agree with Dick. I'm not sure they'd get it right even then.

I'd personally love to see the NFB of Kansas providing IL services in
a fashion similar to the way the NFB training centers are run. (In
fact the CCB has a senior support group to help teach braille and
independent living skills to seniors.)

Services for blind seniors have been ignored for a long tgime. We've
got VR services going in the right direction with the training c enter
contracts, however IL is still pretty worthless.

I'm not sure that covering the whole state is really possible, at
least not if we want meaningful IL services. Having an ineffective IL
center in every town is like having a restaurant chain that doesn't
serve food. A lot of nothing is still nothing.

I'm also afraid that they will try to use these contractors to avoid
paying for real out of state rehab for working age individuals.

I just don't see how it is that the state can provide real services
throughout the state.

Perhaps we (the Federation) could create a Senior Independent Living
Corps that traveled around around the state and work with seniors in
their home communities for days at a time as opposed to making the
client go to a provider for a few hours of training. Somethingells me
that SRS wouldn't contract such a service even if we got it off the
ground.
