It Seemes to me that one party’s legislators snub us, and other party  gives us support and votes with us. One party did not take us for granted but the other party did vote against us. Perhaps we need to start getting more willing to show our `willingness to be bipartisan if those who vote against us will start voatinging with us in the state house and on Hapitol Hill. But if the party that snubes you is against you, you must also execpt that they are against you and what you stand for.

Hello Homers,

I would like to offer a different perspective on this treatey ratification vote in the US Senate. Regardless of how one feels about the treaty, I have to say very candidly that we had it coming for Republicans to vote against it. They see no love lost because of the widespread perception if not the mathematical reality that most registered voters with a declared disability register themselves as democrats. IN other words, this kind of outcome is the price we pay for putting our eggs in one basket. Blind and other disabled Americans find themselves in a political no-mans land in which one party’s legislators snub us because we won’t support their candidates at election time, and the other party ignores us or gives us lip service support at best because they know they can take our votes for granted. Perhaps the blind and disabled are as bipartisan as any constituency in America, but if that is true it seems we need to start getting more willing to show
our bipartisan colors in the state house and on Hapitol Hill. Points to ponder.
Best to all,
Rob Tabor

Seems like the old 'cycle of domestic violence' that I heard about in psychology school.  I think we are really talking about a group that feels cornered and is lashing out.  Sadly they are not afraid to vote against the disabled as a group in their haste to go against the president.  Hasn't Bob Dole bled enough for the GOP to deserve their respect for cryin' out loud!

We'll have to make more calls when the thing come back up in the new congress.  This also definitely should be a talking point at the Senator's offices at Washington Seminar.
Thanks,
Tom

Why did they block it? I really can't see any reason for it.

Statement by the Press Secretary on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
We are disappointed that the overwhelming majority of Senate Republicans today blocked the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which would enshrine American standards that have been developed through decades of bipartisan cooperation. Ratification would require no changes to U.S. law, as the United States already leads the world in promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. However, it would position the United States to support extending across the globe the rights that Americans already enjoy at home. This in turn would improve the lives of Americans with disabilities -- including our wounded service members -- who wish to live, work, and travel abroad. It would also allow our businesses to operate on a more level playing field and reaffirm American leadership on disability rights. For these reasons, and others, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and across the country -- as well as disability advocacy
groups, wounded warriors, veterans groups and business groups -- have supported this treaty. We commend former Senator Dole and the bipartisan coalition of Senators who worked to secure the treaty resolution's passage, including Senators Reid, Kerry, Lugar and McCain. We hope the Senate will reconsider this treaty soon in the next Congress. As President Obama declared in a written statement read in tribute to Senator Dole just before the vote, disability rights should not stop at our nation's shores.
