Greetings Everyone,

The below information refers to a piece of legislation called the Achieving a Better Life Experience (Able) Act of 2014. This piece of legislation is important for those of you who are under the age of 26 or have children or family members under the age of 26 with a disability.

What this act actually does is allow parents and other individuals to create a tax free savings account, like education, health, and retirement accounts, that would be used to cover the cost for items like housing, transportation, assistive technologies, rehab, and numerous other services.

It appears that this legislation was rolled into the tax legislation recently after passing the House earlier this month. Based on these actions, it sounds that after 8 years of various disability advocacy groups endorsing it, it might pass and be signed into law. I must thank my Legislative Director for the BVA for sharing this information with me.
