Dear Fellow Federationists,
The NFBKS South-Central Chapter met yesterday, Saturday, August 13, 2015,
for our regular monthly chapter meeting. We began the meeting by listening
to the Presidential release.
We had a most excellent discussion on our BELL program held July 11-22,
2016. Kate Mendez a first grade teacher in New York City, who is blind
herself, was the instructor for the 2 week program. Envision provided the
classroom space. The program went very well this year. There were 3
participants. This may seem small but it was a good number of students to
have for our very first BELL program. We now know what we are doing and
what to expect at the next one. Kate has already committed to returning
next year to teach. There was good outreach made to Envision staff,
Teachers for the Visually Impaired and parents.
South-Central is planning to donate a braille puzzle map to the Elementary
school VI teacher for her students in September or early October.
The chapter also discussed planning an outreach to the second shift workers
at Envision. We are thinking about a pizza party over their lunch break.
We are planning this for an October Meet The Blind Month activity.
South-Central chapter will be holding a social at the El Mexico Café on
September 17, 2016 from 2-4 pm. We invite you to join us!
Dianne Hemphill announced that she would be attending the Colorado Center
for the Blinds senior week as a participant and a volunteer. The CCB
senior program is August 22-26, 2016. She will be gathering information to
bring back, to assist in developing a seniors division in Kansas.
Refreshments and continueing conversation were enjoyed by members as the
meeting concluded.
